"How to recognize bootlegs" sticky in General Anim

Post by Kai Stromler » Mon Mar 22, 2004 2:07 pm

It seems that like about once every month, someone posts something about how they can get whole TV seasons for like $40, even of stuff that isn't released outside Japan yet, yadda yadda yadda, and somebody has to show up and say hey, that's a bootleg, don't get ripped off.

I just posted my version of the how-to-recognize-bootlegs post for what must have been like the seventh time on a thread in GA. Maybe having a nice convenient sticky at the top of the forum with five or six basic bullet-points and a link to the Pirate FAQ won't reduce the volume of people posting links to certain bootleggers, but it sure would make it easier for the people who have to tell them to stop before they get banned.

Composing this sticky shouldn't be too difficult...searching General Anime for "bootleg" returns only 20 pages of results, and it's pretty easy to see who in that is posting how-to-spot info. I would volunteer for this job, but would prefer to let it fall to someone less abrasive by nature.

This would seem to be a pretty good source.

I think there's several good articles on this subject on ANN, but I can't find them offhand.

Oops, madmag9999 suggested this in the drop box a few months ago and I just forgot about it. Anyone else got any other good FAQ links? I'll make a sticky right now...

Thanks for reminding me and thanks in advance for any more link suggestions!

That seems to be a VERY good one.

Yeah, that was cited in Kai's original post, as well as listed in the credits for the one you posted. I remember reading it a few years ago and it was pretty definitive even then.

With all the bootlegs I've seen so far, it's not so much "don't get ripped off" as "don't do the wrong thing", because they've got all the features of the R1s with only slightly compromised video quality.

But yeah, that kindo f thing does happen more often than it should.
