Best "King Crimson" Songs

Post by )v(ajin Koji » Sun Mar 14, 2004 12:56 pm

Well, I know we have at least one "King Crimson" fan here and I know I asked him this question before but that forum has been messed up and the post lost in THE SHATTERING so I ask again.

Can anyone recommend any great "King Crimson" songs, or albums of special note?

Of course, you know the person to approach on this...

There are 4 studio albums that are accepted among the majority of KC fans as the essentials:

1) In The Court Of The Crimson King (1969) (classic-influenced symphonic prog rock)
2) Red (1974) (heavy prog rock/metal with some avant-garde improv mixed in)
3) Discipline (1981) (progressive pop-rock songs with world music influences)
4) The Power To Believe (2003) (progressive metal with world with some techno-like and ambient signatures.)

All 4 are great musically, and have very different styles.

As for songs, my 'essentials' suggestions are:

21st Century Schizoid Man (1969) - for proto-metal groove
Larks' Tongues in Aspic Part I (1972) - for all-over-the-place avant-garde groove
Red (1974) - for desert island Frippmetal groove
Starless (1974) - for 12-minute tragic ballade with awesome, awesome ending groove
Frame by Frame (1981) - for intricate 80's song with interlocked guitars groove
Dinosaur (1994) - for accessible metal with slightly-concealed political messages groove
Deception of the Thrush (as seen in my vid ;) ) (1997-2003) - for electronic-heavy experimental groove
Level Five (2001-2003) - for killing-you-all-with-superior-heavy-musicianship groove

***

As for my personal favorites among KC - these differ a bit from the commonly-accepted greats.

Favorite album: Starless and Bible Black (1974)
Favorite instrumentals: Fracture (1974), Deception of the Thrush
Favorite songs: Starless, The World's My Oyster Soup Kitchen Floor Wax Museum (2000)
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

:o

I can't say I won't be happy... then there can be a King Crimson multi-editor projeKct :D

God I would love to do that. There is more potential in several long KC pieces than people realize. You could have M:I like vids... only more musically intense :P Well, maybe once I convince more people that I know what I'm talking about when it comes to AMV's....

Once I get more into KC, as I'm sure I will, I wouldn't say no to a multi-editor project. :¬ D

I'm suprised nobody tossed in Happy With What You Have To Be Happy With.
If nothing else, harsh noises get your attention.

Tossed in? I sure will! :D

Happy With What You Have To Be Happy With (if you save it, I think most players will play this dumb format).

A great 'almost-conventional' song.
