I don't get why he's getting a retail cpu and then a $30 cpu fan to go on top of it... Is he thinking of overclocking? He'll need an unlock kit for that and the XPs don't overclock that well anyways. I am also anti-thermaltake since their shit has been shoddy from day one.

I just got some GC68s from SVC. The default 80mm fan is probably too slow to cool it off. But add 80x25mm Sunon 50.2CFM fan on top and you should be good to go. They are very nice heatsinks for very little money.

Bum is actually right... The XP2600+ runs @ 2.13Ghz/333Mhz bus, while the XP2500 runs @ 1.83Ghz/333Mhz bus. That is a pretty big difference for only a couple more $$$. Not sure why they say 1.9Ghz on that website..

Raidmax uses shitty power supplies. It's worth a shot but he might need to get a decent 350watt Antec, Sparkle or Channel Well power supply later on.

Maybe look into getting a CDRW/DVD combo drive instead of just a DVD drive. Seems kinda wasteful.

Cordless mice suck batteries and are less precise. Why do you need a cordless mouse when you're getting a corded keyboard? I $10 logitech optical is all you really need. If he wants a cordless mouse, most people agree the Logitech MX700 is the only worthwhile one out there.

I would be willing to bet the Logitech Z340's would sound better than those Altec Lansings.

Here's what I came up with off pricewatch... and yes I would buy each part separately if it gave me a better value ;).

Chaintech nForce2 $52
XP2600 + $87
GC68 $2 - Sunon 50CFM fan $8
2x OCSystem 512MB PC2700 DDR $63ea
Sapphire 9600XT $156
Audigy2 6.1 PCI sound $67
Seagate 160GB 7200RPM $99
Black Lite-On CDRW/DVD 48x24x48x16 $45
Cheapo black case w/ window $39
Channel Well 420Watt P/S $43
Logitech Elite Keyboard $20
Logitech Black Optical Mouse $15
Samsung SyncMaster 955DF $200
Logitech Z340 speakers $37
Rounded cables $14
----------------------------------

$1010 Shipped...

I feel kinda bad since that's only $124 difference... But there is, I believe more quality parts and better value in the above system, than in what he's ordering. Especially with the power supply & CPU.

I've gone on a bit of a spending spree lately and yesterday I bought 2600+ processor.

It turns out that the speeds 2.13Ghz and 1.9 are both correct.

Athlon XP 2600+ @ 2.13Ghz and 266Mhz FSB
Athlon XP 2600+ @ 1.917 Ghz and 333Mhz FSB

Just posting to clear that up...

I am not so sure about that corran. There are place selling a 2.133Ghz @ 333Mhz bus :

http://www.sonicparts.com/applications/ ... P263&sc=pi

Maybe they have old stock and are trying to pass it off >_>...

While rated 2600+, the 2600+/333 differentiates itself to the 2600+/266 by core clock speed. The 2600+/266 has a multiplier of 16 and front side bus of 133, giving you 2.13ghz, while the 2600+/333 has a multiplier of 12.5 and a front side bus of 166, giving you 2.08ghz.
I was wrong to begin with. I had 1.9 instead of 2.08... Anyways, this is what I read... maybe my source is wrong.

A few things to clear up...

I picked out a retail CPU and then got an additional heatsink because the retail heatsink/fans usually suck. Why spend $89 on an OEM and $18 on that Volcano 9 when you can spend $6 more on the chip to get an extra heatsink/fan and an AMD warranty?

Anti-thermaltake? Been running a Volcano 7 for about a year and a half, no problems yet. Been running memory coolers from Thermaltake, no problems. Both are sleek and silent. Looking at the Essential Computers site, they don't have a 2600.

Raidmax's power supply works fine for me. Raidmax 420w. 4xHD, DVD±RW, CD-RW, Radeon 9000 Pro, 7 chasis fans, extra power supply fan, etc.

My cordless mouse/keyboard combo works fine. The keyboard has been using the same batteries for a good 7 months, no problems. The batteries in my mouse last about a month per pair. Time to bust out the recharger :O

added Z340s to the list and took off the Altec Lansings (although I am running AVS300s and have been for a good two years, no problems yet.
