What's anime's appeal?

Post by OtakuForLife » Mon Dec 15, 2003 11:46 am

I knew this topic has been done to death and I already know
most of the canned responses to this question. But, I'm currently
working on an english compisition II paper that's worth 40% of my
grade and is supposed to be 5-10 pages long with sources.
So, basically I'm asking for people's oppinons to help me brain storm.

(Damn me using a forum for a research tool,
I think the ice skating season in hell just started)

The appeal? IE what makes me want to watch it? *sorry currently feverish so if this doesn't make sense you know why -_- *

-> Multi dimensional plot lines. Some are completely original some are new spins on old favourites.
-> The genres. *wide variety*
-> Normally has strong character development, depending on what you watch.
-> A welcome change from all the "reality tv" crap that's on today
-> Usually includes amazing soundtracks. *music brat so it has appeal*
-> Some can be social/other commentaries on real life type things... i.e for me, Chobits goes beyond robot/male romance comedy. *So it makes me think I guess* ...

That's all for now.

ok ok, a more real reason ^_~

why? two reason really

1) the storys are conected form episode to episode. makes me want to keep watching.
2) and this is a big one, the storys are from Japan, meanign they are not from america. here in america we have our own sotries, our own fariy tails. we grew up with them, and they are a part of our life. anime is made from Japan's stories, and fariy tails. its new and exsiting.

my $0:02

But Ryoko is still my personal mmmmmm something...something...something......

same again, its interesting, and i guess its because its from japan........... some country right over there on the other side of the world, something like that, but mainly its the stories, theyre interesting, its the whole genre......... cartoon for adults, not just for kids pulls away from reality tv and soap operas (neither of wqhich i watch, for obvious reasons)

now , if you can restructure all that into a proper sentence, it could be worthwhile, then again maybe not............. :?
I play violent computer games! I could snap at any minute!!!!

I don't find much anime interesting at all. I'm very very selective about what's 'good' what's 'meh, watchable' and what's 'Ya know... the U.S. should have dropped MORE bombs on Japan... :|'

The anime I look for has to be something I can relate to, so I look for that set in the modern age first of all, no high end fantasy or sci fi for me that is. Then it has to be really interesting, I enjoy human drama over mindless killing or lovey dovey transformation into super heros.

This is why I can also enjoy a lot of American stuff too. :P

(Basic outline)
--- what do yea think?

Thesis: Why anime is so popular?

Point 1:
It's diferent in themes and style then american animation.

Point 2:
The villians have motivation and certin series encourge the viewers
to interprete for themselves

Point 3:
It's not american and so does follow the same rules as american animation.

Point 4:
It has a growing indepent fan base that's self supported.

Point 5:
American TV is failing to give the viewers anything new.
So, people turn to new outlets for recieving different concepts and ideas.

Things The remember:
Throw in Personal Experences.
Add at least 5 resources and use detail.
Add facts and supporting statistics.
Use news sources to show the change in animes mass approval.

Conclusion:
This is why anime is becoming popular.

Why does it appeal to me?

Boobies and tree-humping little girls. Thats all one needs to be happy.
