Computer viewing the videos having an effect on the quality

My sister's computer is quite old. It's a Win98 Plus with 10 GB. My question is that Does this have an effect on the videos that are being watched? I have noticed that on some videos I see distortions in the video. It is the same type of distortion that is seen when you finish editing in Premiere and watch the export of the video only. People who do the videos have not seen the lines of distortion. I wanted to know if her computer is effecting the quality of the video. If this is in the wrong forum please feel free to move it. It *can* happen. I've noticed my AMD 800 Mhz computer at work makes AMVs look like ass. It's probably the shitty video card or monitor because videos look fine on my insanely fast computer at home, so short answer:

Yes.

Oh another thing is codecs. Some codecs require CPU power and thus videos look worse. This is why I always go with MPEG-1 as opposed to DivX or XviD.

As for the question at hand. I would remove any DivX software on the computer and install ffdshow. Because ffdshow is the bomb and I've had no trouble playing back anything with it really.

ffdshow FUCKS up my computer man...ok lemme explain.

When I installed ffdshow a couple of days ago, everytime I click on a XviD file, the preview window in my browser displays the video...that's not the problem...the problem is my computer starts LAGGING like hell. My mouse jumps from place to play and all that horrible stuff. It started happening when I installed ffdshow, I uninstalled it and everythign was back to normal.

It's happened more than once, I wonder why? Oh well, not like I need ffdshow anyway. I thought I did, but I didn't.

Maybe you should right click and choose properties on your movie files. Change the association to a Media Player of your choosing <_< >_>.

I see. I know on her comp I do have problems with some DivX videos. I'll have to check out that ffdshow then. Thanks for the help.
