Eye Sparkles

On the AWA (I believe) website they used to do a game where people would identify an anime character by a clip of their eyes, and the winners would win a free registration.

That got me thinking, as usual.

A theory I have is that every television series, class of character, and creator has a certain style of drawing eye sparkles, shadowing, and shading. Although eye sparkle complexity and size may vary depending on the character’s (emotional) expressive propensity, the shadowing, etc, is continuous among series and creator.
If you’re watching Miyazaki films, he has a unique style of blushing cheeks, as well.

Interestingly, older classics by animators such as Tezuka (Miyazaki still does this) are almost exclusively clustered low-counts of ellipses region focused, while recent series are more commonly polygon-radial combined with one large glare region and a toroidal zone of unspecified shapes.

Since I already take notes on the other aspects of anime, it wouldn’t be any problem to build a database of eye sparkle signatures. Or has someone done this already?

Once the database of styles is built, AWA might want to think of another game.

A database isn't necessarily computer based, you know. I'm simply using the term because I plan on building this information from multiple sources, namely, colleagues. Or other people I manage to get (force) to watching anime.

Where am I going to get this anime? The library. Why? Becuase my DVD collection sucks.
