Why hasn't anyone ever seriously studied how dreams are generated?

It’s interesting how the dreams I experience are usually linked to recent events, thoughts, and/or physical conditions during sleep. I can remember them if I wake up and rehearse the information within 30 seconds of waking up. Here are some of the interesting ones…

I am in the state penitentiary/loony-bin/etc watching movies in the lecture hall. This one was experienced after watching the Discovery Channel special on prison medial – how taxpayers have to pay for a “Club Fed” array of medical care that sometimes even they don’t have.

I am in my old house, watching TV and eating cheap 50 cents pizza with my cat, by myself. Nostalgia, or just hunger?

I am in the woods, doing something. I have this vague feeling it was anime-related…

Generic: I am trying to do something, but I never finish. It either is never completed, or I get sidetracked and never get there. For example, I often go to a symposium but miss it because I lost track of time in the exhibit hall. In dreams, it’s usually something much simpler.
