Guitar Tab Query

Post by SS5_Majin_Bebi » Wed May 14, 2003 12:56 am

Okay, If anyone here plays guitar, or If they know a little (or maybe alot) about reading guitar tab, could you provide me with a little assistance?

I would like to know how to play tab when its written like this:

--------0------
--------5------
--------5------
---------------
--------0------
---------------

Top line is thinnest on the guitar (E string) bottom

Christ! oops I hit the "submit" button by mistake. Okay, ill continue.

Top line is the "E" string (thinnest on the guitar) and bottom line is also "E" but the thickest on the guitar. We'll call them 1 and 6, respectively. So it goes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 from the top to the bottom, and the numbers on the line are the fret numbers. I need to be able to hit strings 1 (open), 2 and 3 at the 5th fret, miss 4 and hit 5 (open) all in one pick motion. No arpeggios, it has to be smooth. HOW THE HELL DO I DO THAT? By the way, that can be applied to any tab where the strings you need to hit are separated by a string you are NOT to hit.

Sorry If you don't understand it, i cant really explain it better than that.

Try only playing 5 strings and then muting the 4th with your first finger whilst pressing down on the 2nd and 3rd.

Thanks A.D. Oh, btw, right after I posted this, I found a site that answered that exact question, asked in almost the exact same words and manner. Funny how hours upon hours of previous searching turned up absolutely nil, until now.

Guitar takes too much coordination. My fingers are fat too. Oh and for the life of me I can't tune a guitar :O.

 I bet I am tone deaf.

Yeah...I think that the majority of online guitar tabs are too difficult to understand to be usable. What I do is let my guitar instructor listen to songs burned on a cd using a portable cd player. From there, he writes the song out.

i'd probably play it like this:

--------0------
--------5------
--------5------
--------x------
--------0------
---------------

the x is a muted string, or id just pause skip over that string, depends on which sounds better ... or theres always the possiblity taht the guy who tabbed it made a mistake/did a shitty job. I've run into both scenarios ... it's quite annoying, exspecialy whan your still a begginer and assume that it's correct.

Nah, it was an online tab, but I found the official one in the official book that its from, and its EXACTLY the same. If you want to know, its Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" and muting the "skipped" strings is exactly what you are supposed to do. I didn't really pick an easy song, seaing as I'm a beginner, but....

well you did pick a good song at least, theres lots of good stuff from mettalica that you can learn. The first song i learned end to end was teh Buffy teh vampire slayer theme ... i think it's just because i happened to find it and it was short and easy. But lately i've stopped using tab and trying to play other groups songs. I usualy jsut sit there and make stuff up, usualy it all sounds the same though ... and none of it is particularly good ... if you want an example go to my site, theres a link on my Bio page to my guitar playing ... those 4 "songs" are pretty much the best stuff i came up with while my guitar was plugged into my computer ... and none of those are particularly good ... so ... yea i suck.
