EarthCurrent's Dam Adventure

Post by EarthCurrent » Sun Apr 20, 2003 11:16 pm

In many places around the world, Easter is a time for families to get together and eat ham and look for eggs. For me, Easter is spent prowling the Western United States looking at Dams.

That's right, I have a hobby that involves visiting dams!
This year I traveled to Colorado and visited Curecanti National Recreation Area, which is home to three different dams! Great!

This is Blue Mesa Dam, which holds back the largest of the three reserviors in the area.

This is the Marrow Point dam. Out of the three, it is the highest dam and also generates the most hydroelectric power! Exciting!

This is Crystal Dam which lies below Blue Mesa and Marrow Point dams. I couldn't get a good shot of this dam as it was blocked off for security purposes. We don't want terrorist blowing up our dams, after all.

Throwing materials off of dams in in violation of Federal Law. I could go to jail for that...

I take pictures only and subscribe to the Leave-No-Trace doctrine

Hoover has a nice collection of hats and, for some reason, shoes (?) that are recovered from the lower deck after they are lost by tourists. The hats make sense, being blown off by the wind or falling from people's heads when they gaze over the side, but even I was at a loss for the shoes.

Did they have any dam fishing? It would be neat to catch some dam fish. Maybe go by the dam gift shop, after doing some dam sight-seeing. Did you get to look at the dam rocks up close?

Anyways, national lampoon aside, is the Blue Mesa Dam a rockfill dam?
