Is there a way to edit DVD-ripped subtitles?

Hi there, me again.

Is there any way that I can edit the subtitles once I rip them from the DVD?

Usually I use VobSub after I rip the .VOB and .IFO files in VDub, but in some DVDs the subtitles just look ugly and I want to change them. So is there any way I can do this? (The main reason being I don't wanna resubtitle the whol thing myself.)

Not directly.

DVD subtitles are actually pictures, so what you see is what you get.

However, there is one thing you can do. You can use an OCR-based program such as subrip to recognise the letters and output to a timed text form that you can then use to make subtitles with.

You can then, with a bit of know-how about the different subtitle script types, change things like fonts, colours, borders etc for your final encode.

i didnt know that they were pictures....hmm, ya learn something everyday. ^_^

Maybe I'll try those OCR progs, but I've worked with them about a year ago and i didnt like em...

DVD is an international standard. Unless they made the standard for non-picture subs Unicode (and even then unicode is missing many chinese characters) how would you expect to do:
Russian subs
Japanese subs
Arabic subs

etc etc...

They had to be pictures so that everyone could have subs. Plus they really aren't subtitle tracks, they're "Subpicture" tracks. Take a look at the original Ghostbusters DVD for some of the really fun stuff they did with subpicture tracks.

DVDs like the Matrix use a subpicture track for the white rabbit icon that pops up, etc.
