Manga & Ranma t-shirt on "Everwood"

Anyone here follow the WB show "Everwood"? Well, the main character, Ephram, frequently wears Ranma t-shirts (one with P-chan, one with Ryoga) and makes manga references. Now, there was an interview with the creator in Animerica, but since I only bought 1 issue, I don't have it. Can anyone tell me why the creator did this? I don't need the whole article, just the reason. Thanks!
