Codec help needed =)!

Would anyone be able to give me ideas on which codec's to use when I video capture with my "All-In-Wonder Radeon 8500DV"? I know nothing about codecs, especially about the individual settings for each codec. Everytime I try to video capture the picture always comes out poor. If no one can tell me a good codec to use an the settings and what the settings mean, would anyone be able to point me to a site or essay or paper that gives good documentation about understanding codecs? I also need help on picking a codec to use for when I export my videos using adobe premiere. Thank you for your time =)

Actually guys, the guides do not give much info on capturing.

I would suggest you refer to your manual as to what codecs your hardware supports or what the software included supports.
