Has anyone ever wanted to...

Post by ZephyrStar » Mon Dec 06, 2010 12:15 pm

Cut an anime series into their own interpretation of a "movie?" For example, I really love Noir, but it suffers from pacing issues and flashback hell. I always wondered what it would be like to possibly recut the series into a... fairly long "movie."

Or something like Angel Beats. (I thought it was a lot of fun, but) that show was all over the place...and it suffered for trying to cram too much into just 13 eps. It intrigues me to think that if you cut down to just the main story arc, could you get a coherent "movie" out of it? Hmm.

AB! could use right the opposite - being 26 eps long instead of 13 eps long.

Very much so. (S2 NAO) Though, you could do what I'm suggesting several ways with that series...if you just wanted to follow the drama route with them trying to graduate, you could cut out all the funny/random and make something, or if you prefer the funny random, you could use it to make something totally different. And use your own soundtrack!

I think I read somewhere that Noir is going to be made into a live action tv series @_@ I wonder how it's pacing will go...

I've often wanted to cut out a lot of the "fat" out of a lot of "action" shows where most of the action is paused for the characters standing around explaining what is going on/planning all their uber moves in their heads forever...

You mean like the many many "abridged" series out there?

Yes, once I took part in such a project. Check out Gantz Action.

It didn't have any success.

Standard 13 episode model is still about 3-4 episodes of character introductions and setting (depending on how you spread out the cast), 6-8 episodes of general nonsense to actually get you somehow attached to the characters, 2 episodes with important plot, and 1 (or often less) episodes of resolution. The cynic in me say just about anything like that could be made into a 2 hour movie.

These types of series are more like short novels in terms of pacing than movies. Movies are a lot more like Short Stories than Novels... Pacing and whatnot.
