What is your philosophy on art, and how does that philosophy apply to your editing (or if you're merely a viewer, your viewing)?
Earlier, when I x2'ed, I didn't have time to post my own philosophy. So...
Here is my philosophy on art:
Art is what we concieve it to be. To some, music is art. They believe the soft sounds of ballads, the hard rock of rock, or the subtle sound of a piano to be "art". To others, literature is art. Reading and "becoming" characters or people in literature is art to them.
Then we come to what the main question is. What is "art"? To me, this definition is beyond defining. A believe that the roughest definition of it is this: Art is what makes you realize that there are things in this world beyond our control, and that makes you accept that fact, and become emmersed in in the chaos.
While I'm sure many will disagree, this is what I believe.
To me, music is art. When I hear music, I hear the planet and the people on it. I listen to many different genres of music, so I can "feel" the culture of the where the song originated. A perfect example of this is is Breaking Benjamin. Their acoustic version of "Diary of Jane" makes me actually feel what the group's definition of "love" could be. Love, in my opinion is something beyond our control. Since music allows me to assimilate into the chaos, I believe it to be art.
To others, they could have other things that allow them to feel this way, and that is what they consider art.
I digress.

(Dang, my post cut off for some reason)
Anyway, this influences my editing, because I try to make the viewer feel assimilated into the chaos that the AMV's theme is. I use footage from scenes that made me feel the same way, or I turn the footage to fit the theme. It all just depends on the situation and them.
For my viewing: I like AMV's that depict a theme and have a deep plot that makes me "feel" the chaos of the theme they are trying to conceive.
*end rant*

for some reason i think this post calls for "cake art":

First we have the "Elmo Cake" this is a cake that just about every little kid will love, its yummy sugary and poppy just like the kids like them. It uses a popular source as its basis, so many of these cakes can be easily sold. This cake is very easily digestible, and many kids will love it.

Then we have the "Flower cake" something that takes literally from something else and slaps it on top of the cake... its pretty and conservative and looks completely untouchable. Many of these cakes will be sold because people also tend to have fine events showcasing such a cake. (Such as a wedding, or perhaps even a birthday for someone with more "refined taste"). This is a very pretty cake even if the decorations are not eatable.

The "Fun Cake", takes random toys and places them everywhere, it doesn't matter that it looks crazy, and even possibly "crap" to some other cake makers. It is very obvious that the creator of this cake had a ton of fun putting this cake together.

Then the "Chess Cake". While this is unique with it's decoration, and use of sugar cubes, its possible that most people won't appreciate this cake. It's uneven surface makes it almost difficult to tell where to cut, but still somehow the cake works... this cake may not be easily digestible.

The "Dog Cake" while well made would probably scare people away. This cake scares me, and what scares me even more is how well the cake was put together.

The "Blue Cake" has both my favorite color and my favorite flavor of frosting. I cant help but like this cake at least a little even though its put together rather sloppy.

Lastly the "Sewing Machine Cake". This cake is amazing, and I bet it tastes amazing too. It is not only very well designed and aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but it uses the type of frosting I love. The maker of this cake must have some real talent and I hope that they are a professional in their field, but perhaps they still only design cakes as a hobby. Either way I see this cake as amazing.

I hope some of you got the references O.o

I've taken one Art class in college, and the big things they liked to stress were that art was hard to define, everyone had their own opinions, and (like in most things) some opinions on art are better than others. No democratization of ideas here - there are opinions that mean jack shit. That's kinda one of the only things i liked about that class.
