Anime or Animes [linguistic discussion]

All this talk got me to thinking, and it hurt so I stopped. The reference about animation in books and dolls got me thinking how in Spanish cartoons is said as munechitos, which literally means “little dolls”.

Also from what I know Spanish is linked straight to Latin (right??) and animate in Spanish means “to liven up” or “ to move” plus I found this on a search=

“Animation means, literally, to breathe life into some thing. A transformation is involved, what was still now moves.” It was a Latin website (of sorts).

Just wondering how animation is linked to German, I can understand Latin but German??? Is it cause of English??, damn it all I should have gone to college, I freaking knew it….

Linked to German? Nah, it's just like pretty well every other European language - since modern European cultures 'borrowed' a huge amount of knowledge, words, and even the writing system from Latin, a lot of words went over, in various forms. This is because most modern European cultures started off as the illiterate, migrating 'barbarians' that Rome was unsuccessfully fighting back in the first few centuries AD; so obviously, they didn't have words for every thing or concept that Latin would have. German is one of these cultures/languages, and animation is one of those words.

There's obviously German animation, but I'm not aware of them making any of the early breakthroughs. I may be wrong.

Well, it's certainly not correct from the standpoint of how the normal romaninization of Japanese is done, or probably from how the word is said by the Japanese either.

What I meant, was that from the standpoint of the integrity of English (well, not that it has much anymore, but...), we should spell words according to our pronounciation rules and pluralize them by our rules, not those of the language we borrowed from.

I don't think all the exceptions we have in English to practically every rule (if not all of them) are anything to be proud of.

I’m not even going into details, just no.
Going to quickly comment some things and I’m gone.

Yes, in Spanish it’s Muñequitos (small dolls/ TV cartoons) or Muñequitos Mañaneros (Morning Cartoons).
As stated before Spanish is a Romantic Language thus an offspring of Latin (the mother language).
Anímate in Spanish means “cheer up”. Like when someone has a sad face people say “Chico/a anímate”.
Again this is a linguistic discussion so who knows how animation itself is linked to German (the language).

Animation is not linked to German because of English.
What was stated before is that the English LANGUAGE has a lot of German influences in the case of the US.
British English is basically intact and the “original” one.

Well, you’re most definitely talking about the English in the US.
And you statement has some truth but like I said before about the word anime:

The word is entirely Japanese; the people in the West just gave it a new meaning.

So anime and animes can be viewed as different things, from a true purist linguistic POV.

Anime= animation in Japanese and in some cases the singular form of animes in the West.

Animes = plural of anime as known in the West.

Something like that.

The English in the US is indeed something else. Let’s not even discuss that.

Plural forms of anime:
animi
animae

I always avoid attacking the plural of anime by pluralizing the following word like:
anime OVAs
anime movies
anime features
etc.
Since it is debatable I just dance around it instead.
