just my two cents, but i favor subject matter and heart over pixel problems. i'm not saying that as a judge but more as a member of the audience trying to enjoy a good show. i've always felt that way tho, some people just don't have the ability (or access) to produce HQ videos, but certainly know how to edit and tell a story with video and music. that's just me.xstylus wrote:Michael has a very inclusive mindset when he weighs whether a vid of a particular "quality" is allowable. Unfortunately that means 30hr judging sessions and the need to have a cheese grater nearby for my eyes.
Sometimes the best way to learn is through failure. Permitting mediocre quality only encourages it to continue. Taking a harder stance by failing a deficient entry will teach them that quality matters, and encourage them to rise to the challenge in the future.
But Michael is right, I am way too strict. Realistically, I'd be happy if I simply never saw unforgivables like divx logos, subtitles, or messed up aspect ratios in a submitted vid ever again. The rest is what the tech score is for.

Do you remember the "internet is for porn" amv?Rider4Z wrote:just my two cents, but i favor subject matter and heart over pixel problems. i'm not saying that as a judge but more as a member of the audience trying to enjoy a good show. i've always felt that way tho, some people just don't have the ability (or access) to produce HQ videos, but certainly know how to edit and tell a story with video and music. that's just me.
great AMV, despite the crazy aspect ratio (making people stretched beyond all compare) the video still turned out to be a great success. great example of the 'heart over pixel problems".
though i know there are people who say that if you can't even get 'those technical parts' right, you've already done a bad job. while that stance maybe a little extreme, i do have to agree, just a SMALL amount of additional effort can fix those issues. >_<

Well, I suggest cuitting down the amount of entires to say 2 or 3 per person would help resolve that. I don't see the point of having up to 8 accpeted entires... As for the quality, I think there needs to be minimum rules on that or else everyone will think it's just fine to include Dvix logos, crappy encodes, etc.. Actually having the rules there gerts the creator who does that to LEARN and IMPROVE so your actually helpign them in some ways.xstylus wrote: Michael has a very inclusive mindset when he weighs whether a vid of a particular "quality" is allowable. I try to help out, fix aspect rations, encodes, etc as much as I can for my contests, but I think if your going to edit, you need to learm the basics including basic quality.

I agree that some videos are great, but quality wise are not. However, I don't really think there is a lack of ability to produce a HQ video...wouldn't that just be called lazy? It's just a really lame excuse that I've heard oh so many times now. =\Rider4Z wrote: i've always felt that way tho, some people just don't have the ability (or access) to produce HQ videos,

Re: Anime Expo 2010 Anime Music Video Contest Rules Up
Lack of knowledge of technical aspects does not immediately mean someone is lazy. If it's someone who has been around and should know better, then yes, they are being lazy, but we can't even pretend to know how much another person understands about the process. To us, it seems simple, to someone who doesn't know, it can be completely confusing. I, for one, remember being overwhelmed by all of what I considered technical mumbojumbo ("Interlacing? Aspect ratio? the hell is that?!"), but I only even knew I was doing something wrong after it was pointed out to me. I just simply didn't know any better, I didn't have an eye for picking out things like that. If you did when you were starting out, good for you! You had a better start than a lot of us.
That being said, I do agree with cutting videos that don't stand up to the quality standards. If you did something wrong, learn how to fix it. I see a lot of people posting in contest threads when they have videos disqualified for the technical aspect of it, so there is an obvious willingness to learn how to correct it. I have seen a few contest rules that link to the guides here and I think that is an awesome idea that I'd like to see more often. Just add a little link to the DQ e-mail. "Your video was disqualified due to _____. Here is a guide that can help you fix the problem so that you can resubmit."* It'll help them help themselves and keep the quality of the contest higher.
*I'm actually not sure if some coordinators already do this. I've never had a video DQ'd because of a technical aspect...>_>

Yes, Vlad, I think you do an admirable job of helping out your entrants, and well, running your contests in general. We should clone you and put the clones to work coordinating AMV contests across the globe. Mwahahaha!
