We have a great playback solution for AC^3 which allow us to playback almost all formats, adjust video playlists on the fly, have a room operate continiously for up to 18hrs (in practice, there was then a 3hr black out period from 6am till 9am) without interuption, error, crash or disturbance.

THEY'RE CALLED COMPUTERS.

Seriously, with any laptop you can connect your data projector to the VGA out and use nVidia or ATi's theater system so that on the laptop's panel display you have the media player operating in a window with access to the playlist and all other operations while anything in the video window on the overlay channel is dumped full screen to the secondary display, without anyone seeing what's going on behind the scenes. You can transfer files, change the playlist or sit on your butt and play solitare while the room operates smoothly. Using a wireless VGA system you can even have the laptop in an ENTIRELY different room and operate it remotely or from the back of the room without being in the way.

A lot of people complain that computers are unreliable for video room playback because it's not uncommon for people to encounter problems, namely having something crash or having your anti-virus system set up. That's what you get for not spending the 15mins of effort necessary to make sure your computer won't fuck it all up.

In conclusion, laptops are the ideal solution assuming you actually KNOW how to use a computer.

Hey such nice compliments from DokiDoki, and Mike and everyone else was just as good to me as getting the statue. so thank you guys, and it was great meeting all of you!

umm I have nothing to say other than that except, congrats to the winners, especiall you mikestrife it's about damn time! lol

And you wonder why you got banned from AN's forum?

I actually, disagree with the use of computers at cons for a few reasons. One, that requires either the con to get one, or a person to bring in their own, and since people are not always going to be involved, that means one year you might have it, next year you might not. It's quite a pain in the ass to have things like that changing from year to year.

Also, I actually quite liked the way AN went with it this year. I like the idea of a single format to be used, so that everyone is using a universal format so no one has any superiority based on that. If their quality is better, it is because they took the time to make it so. They used a good clean source, editted it properly and used any necessary filters to make it even better after production is complete. If we start using multiple formats which allow for a range of bitrates, etc, you may encounter a noticeable difference between one video and the next, simply because the other person had a little more knowledge in some new fancy format that most others have never heard of, or may not even be compatible with their computer. Thus, I actually like the idea of using a single format(MPEG4, MPEG-2, etc) so that you can get a universal stance behind. You also wouldn't run into any problems with someone sending in a video with some strange format that no one had heard of before and then encounter playback issues on a single video while all the others play flawlessly. A single format allows for a uniform stance, where the videos are judged on the editting, nothing else, as it should be.

Dude, if you can't round up a handfull of laptops for video rooms for once a year, you have to be the most unresourceful person on the planet.

Here's an idea. Since you want a laptop so bad, go buy one yourself, and donate it to the video staff for the convention.

So why are you complaining then? If you've done that already, and they decided against it, then that's their choice, regardless of whether you liked it or not.
