What makes an amv original for you?

New theme and concept. I think the whole.. "first to use a song" thing to be original is just complete BS

Originality..hmm... An AMV having a unique way of fitting in with a song that isn't overused. Something like that.

When it comes to making an amv, I do as I please when I want, how I want and what I think would be a good fit for myself. I'll sometimes make an amv out of request for somebody. I'll sometimes re-edit one of my old vids. However, I don't let the "org" drive my view of what type of amv I wish to make. I don't let cons dictate my popularity nor my view.

Making an amv for me is purely because I want to and whether its Bleach, EVA, DBZ, Haruhi Suzimiya, Fate Stay the Night or Nana I do as I please because first and foremost, I make an amv for one person....me.

Doing something I haven't seen before. Whatever the something may be is up to the editor, I suppose.
Anyone can make a sappy romance video or an action video.. it's how it's done that matters. There's no way to describe an "original" video. They just happen.

This is the rest of what i was going to say:

they were asking questions on whats considered original...
not on weather or not they should make only what the org considers original
(not to mention that the people active in the forums are only a small percentage of "the org")

hell, make all the unoriginal vids you want!

of course make what you want to make...

But for me:
if the concept has been hashed out enough then its not going to be original...
and as some people have said before, even if its not original, i can still enjoy it, because I will always have my favorite genres/concepts

not to mention how "originality" is going to be really subjective...

for someone who hasnt seen a "Sakura & Syaoran Cardcaptor Sakura Video" that would be pretty original compared to someone (like me) who has at one point attempted to download every CCS video in existance...

but if they have seen enough Belldandy & Keichi tributes, they might not find another romance pairing all that original because its still romance, just two different characters.

originality is subject to the viewer, what they have seen, and what they havent already seen...

In a way it does though, Katie. The topic is what makes an amv original. Whenever you create an amv, that's an idea you think of. Now granted some people will say an amv is unoriginal if its overused anime, or an overused song or even an overused theme.

On the same token, some people may say that to create a totally original amv may take a lot of effects, a new song that's never been used before, or an anime that just popped out of Japan.

I think what truly, honestly makes the amv original is the creator itself. Remember how we discussed once that amv's that win the VCA are not neccessarily amv's populated with effects or amv's that win con after con? The amv's that win are driven by the emotional response of the viewer(s.) The viewers are really what determines if that vid is going to be a hit or not.

For instance I see the difference of opinion from a-m-v.org to YouTube and all though I will say that I think the opinions on YouTube tend to be nicer and less critical. The opinions of a-m-v.org help you to produce a better amv as long as its constructive criticism and not some person saying "you suck."

Basically, when I stated that "I make amv's for one person...myself" that's why I also think my amv's are original because of myself. That's why I think all amv's are original despite the anime or song (unless of course its DBZ with Linkin Park.) lol

Now this topic could go on for years and it has been debated for years. Maybe its because of the group that I have around me that determines my view but every amv should be given its fair view and every amv should not be judged prematurely because of anime, song or even creator.
