One idea for the future could be that participants could choose between hard copies and downloading. This would save time and money, and would probably result in a higher video turnout as well.
Another idea: put a donation jar out by the VAT tables. Try and collect enough cash to buy 200-300 blanks. So, next year, no mailing of blank DVDs and staff can buy whatever brand they prefer. 100-packs are going for $23 this week, so it shouldn't need more than $100 - allowing some for sleeves or jewel boxes, plus mailers.

Is it me or do people have slightly higher exspectations then they should. As if every video should be uber epic in the pro contest. While i don't like every video i still think its better then the finalists at AX this year. Mabye that doesn't say much either.

Old boy is fun to see.

BGC was nice to see even though i loath the song used. Might cause me to go over to one of the classic series.

There is one vid that lowers the contest down this year and i won't say anything else since the person who made it obviously did it to offend and grose people out.

Outside of deathnote at least the videos are varied and different enough to avoid annoying repeats. (i'm looking at you Naruto/bleach)

ooh nice! I got some dual plastic slimpacks from some store on the internet for cheap the other day (I'm not telling you how cheap, they made an error in my favor on the invoice lol). I might have to add those, their neat, and, of coarse, cheap to send (AND I can REUSE them ;p hehehe I'm uber cheap). I also like the ISO idea if VAT doesn't wanna/ can't lean on donations.

also... I was talking to a friend the other night and she asked who I'm voting for?? I don't generally vote in the first round when there are no CATEGORIES though. What's the deal behind that?? There must be a reason, don't know how this contest could have survived so long without categorys. I just, especially without the bookmarks, don't find it worth my time to sift through (threw?? they both look wrong) 40 some odd entrys for each category. Maybe it was ok before cuz the quality level was higher or something. Idunno, apparently I usher in the low quality revolution with my first AWA Pro experience lol.

Not too say this isn't the BEST darned contest I'd entered yet! ;p.... the plateau seems much more smooth, I actually think I have a chance! We all know how we hate that dork that throws off the bell curve!! lol

I don't unnecessarily go into the voting with extremely high expectations, but I generally have higher expectations for this contest then I do for say, Youmacon or Sugoi-con since that tends to pander to the new and upcoming creators and many of those who still use WMM primarily.

I suppose what most disappointed me this year is the lack of that one video in the contest that from the moment I saw it I pegged it as the one video that will win best of show. Nothing really seems to stand out like that for me this year, like it had in previous years. But I suppose this could also mean that the competition is more heated.

There are quite a few I really liked however.

#12 2000 Wings Pro, it was great to see something this old used and done well. The song choice and editing really made the video work. It was simple, and I loved that.

#15 Our Innocence, it was heart warming and beautiful. Just what I want to see in a romance.

#16 One Fine Day, this was just way too fun. Fast paced editing really fit well. I just can't get enough of it.

I can also mention #3, #8, #11, #13, #19, #23, #25,#36, and #42 but i can't really put into words why I liked these.

Who knows it might just be one of those years, that or the masters is really getting a boost. I noted 13 entires on the awa-vat website. Thats just the ones that have been uploaded its an actual amount comparable to the pro entirs. So i think mabye pro sufered a bit because of the masters.

I entered it, didn't have my vid done by the time of pros deadline but in theary i could have finished it in time to send off to pro, i didn't. Choose a different video but hey i get all you poor guys to see one of my vids so thats allways fun. It'll be nice to see who clames what after the contest is over. I allready know who made code monkey and the other side. I'm not going to spoil who but hey thats the fun thing about this contest.

Well, the Code Monkey one isn't that hard to figure out. Considering it's already been announced on the org. : P

maybe also the quality level is due to the deadline being a bit sooner than alot of ppl expected. Not to say it should change. In fact I believe it should be sooner! I got my vid done early ;p.

So I just finished watching the pro discs (and boy, are my arms tired)...

I was pleasantly surprised to hear The Mamas and The Papas in there, and Propaganda was seriaas fuckwin. Something I thought was funny about this contest was three of the videos were shown at SacAnime this year. Image

Pro doesn't start off with any categories because that's the way Pro is. A constant pet peeve of a number of us when observing contests is that when you have set categories that have to be adhered to, you have two problems that can crop up: first, there has to be a video that wins that category even if nothing really fits (or nothing is really that good in that category), and second there are always videos that don't fit the typical pre-defined categories well and as such may not win despite being far better overall.

Pro's totally fluid category system was in part designed to counter these- if there aren't enough comedy videos for a comedy category, viola! No comedy category. Several excellent comedic ero-horror videos? Create a category for it. It's not perfect of course- but its unique and overall has worked fairly well through the years (at least those that I've seen).
