Oh! Oh! I forget who first thought this one up, I'm pretty sure it wasn't me, but:

Two-VCR Iron Chef! (sorry, 'Iron Editor' :P )

You give teams of contestants a bucket/bin/box full of random VHS tapes, and they have to make a music video old-school-style with nothing more than 2 VCRs, a TV, and a CD player.

Haha, I was joking about the MEP stuff...I guess people took it seriously.

I dunno, I think that would only bring up all the things that some of us old-schoolers find annoying about modern-day AMVs. Say someone tried to remake Engel...basically the only thing you could possibly add to that video is flashy effects, which would be completely annoying. Remake C-Ko's Total Eclipse of the Heart? Same thing. The only "good" improvements that might come out of it would be tighter editing...and someone once did this with one of Brad DeMoss's videos, and he felt totally insulted.

Yeah, you covered basically everything I just wrote
I have no idea how to use this new forum.

There is also the possibility to re-make them with the same cuts, effects (if any) and such from the old vids, just using cleaner source footage. And not doing that icky (S)VHS (frequently 3rd+ gen) step. But, how this would be recieved would be different with each creator whose videos are being remade.

How about remake the greats with different anime?

AMV Hell 3 had a hilarious azumanga/Believe parody.

When I was trying to get to sleep earlier today, I was thinking about this topic for no apparent reason, and I came up with the "Single Song Challenge".

The only reason I thought of it is because I thought it had the same abbreviation as a "Straight Class Challenge" from Final Fantasy Tactics, but now I see that's wrong.

In retrospect, it was a really bad idea that would get really old really quickly, and thus I will not bother to share it.

I still like the abbreviation "SSC", though. Feel free to use that as an idea springing board.

I wasn't there, but I think they received a reasonable number of entries considering it's a relatively small contest to begin with. Dokidoki might know more about this. Or the contest organizer, InitialB, although he doesn't post here very often.

I agree completely. I only mentioned it as a backhanded reference to the Kunicon contests that launched with a prize that was a plasma TV. It got them a lot of attention.

Parodies of well-known AMVs ? (Meaning complete videos, not just a short piece of one.)

I was thinking much more along the lines of "same song, different application." Engel done straight, instead of as parody... "Phantom" with a different series... heck, Vlad apologized (jokingly) to me this year for "taking" my Classical Gas subject. I definitely wouldn't intend "same footage, same song, better video quality clips." That'd just be dumb. Might work out as an entire contest of "Pop will eat itself."

Of course, the hidden purpose would be to get all the flash-flash ravepuppies to watch the amazing progeniters of this hobby, and discover that adding tech tricks doesn't let you surpass the brilliance of the original... meh. Still sacreligous.

We did this, years ago. Didn't work very well essentially for the reasons you guessed at. Only got two entries, and it was still a drag watching them one after another. Didn't help that it was "My heart will go on" either. (Don't look at me... I wasn't in charge then.)

Hmm... parodies of well-known AMVs... perhaps remixed versions of the songs... vids to same songs, completely different concepts... vids with same anime and similar concepts to completely different songs... direct references to other amvs.... "Pop will eat itself"... roll it all into one contest. Might be something there for a single-year stunt.

(Incidentally, we're solidly at the "shooting the breeze stage". Nobody get worried about what I might or might not decide now. We're half a year away from definite plans.)

Yeah, complete videos.

Although this might piss off certain creators but I don't think Kevin Caldwell would really care anymore.

Maybe blind judging on these? :D

Audience vote?
