i have very mixed feeling on this subject, its like trying to decide if i like kenshin or Lord of the Rings bettter... i mean, sure a broadsword ( we will consider this a claymore, hand and a half, and larger type) is a much larger weapon, but i have seen many accounts where people just beleive that the braodsword was some piece of sheet metal that people flung at each other to kill people. there was alot of technique involved in weilding this weapon as well. Remember, if the broadswordsman was so slow he couldnt block normal attacks, then the enemly would use nothing but rapiers and long swords. The broadsword was a larger weapon than the katan, which meant that the weilders did have to by physically stronger, this does not mean that they were friggen viking barbarians. Samurai did not have to by as physically superior because of the style of fighting they used. many of the styles focused more on quickness and agility. Now, if you have spent many years perfecting a sword art, then yes, you would acquire some hand to hand combat moves, its natural and part of the technique. The European swordsman's style would probably look more like current day boxing, while the samurai would probably use a primitive version of martial art. It would be a very even match. It would all depend on the skill of each person.

true it would be even indeed.
but yes both weapons, katana and broadsword have good sides and bad sides.
you can't really judge those weapons by their make. It is really the person who wield them that is judged.

although yes the broadsword is more simple than the katana, a master of the weapon would be an even match to that of the master of the katana.

Ha! You think that samurais have the whole fighting-with-no-armor thing down? The Picts were true masters of no-armorfu, first they would dye thier skin blue with wode, witch is also hallucinogenic by the by, and would spike their hair up with lime. Then they would get the biggest sword they could find and would rush into battle nekid! So they'd all be out their naked, tripping and swingin' around their broadswords around like their was no tomarow.

Only problem was that the Romans, the Picts arch nemises, had short, quick swords and big shields, not to mention good armor and battle formations. But the Romans still had to wall off part of their contry to keep the Picts out.

Anyway, along another train of thought, broadswords are a lot easier to make, as I think has been pointed out already, so while one guy was working on one katana another guy already had ten broadswords (give or take). Picts win by mob rule.

Dang you! I was thinking of posting some sword-chuck goodness but last time I linked to a 8-bit theater comic it didn't go very well. Anyway was this perhaps the image you were thinking of?

Booya. I would have cut off the t-shirt part, but that would require a good three minutes of extra work, and thats not fun.
