Oh, I understand that perfectly, what I didn't really know, mainly because what I do know has come from my own conclusions (I'm biologically-minded as well ^^) was this:
... we have a Y chromosome (Y), its only 'real' purpose to distinguish between male and female
...did not know for a fact, that is.

...erm. In layman's (i.e. lazy) terms:

As far as I've ever heard, there are other genes on the Y chromosome. All a Y really is is a cut-off version of an X chromosome. So everything on the X up to the point at which it gets cut off is also present on Y.

Sex-linked genetic traits like colorblindness etc. would be on that part of the X chromosome that was truncated at some point in super-prehistory, or to put it in uber-stupid terms they fell off the Y chromosome.

So basically there are other things on the Y chromosome, because there are other things on the X too. Maybe not deathly important things, but it's not there "just" to determine gender.

Criminy, I really have to read up on this stuff. Genetics was my specialty in college, but you'd REALLY never know it nowadays. :x

>_<;; I'm sorry, it's been a long day and I'm speaking gibberish. Somebody could probably say that a lot better.

this I know, but the Y chromosome is almost to the point of obsolescence and redundancy now. It cant even fight off the nasty X chromosomes!! Even more proof that you girls rule the world!!

Oh! Then cool. 8) It sounded garbled to me, that's all. If it wasn't, then great.

Lyrs wrote:I just got my chromosomes tests back and its quite amazing and very surprising. The report says that i am XXY. that's not normal, i think, because most people either have XX or XY.

If you're wondering what the Y is, it's a small y-shaped chromosome that is present in all males, it's what tells the cells to develope human male organs.

And no Rachel, don't even think about what ever you were goign to say cause the Y doesn't matter in my case. The extra information, my doctor tells me, comes from a problem during metaphase which did not fully seperate.

The doc says Y chromosomes in girls as well as boys is more comom then most people think. and the presence of the y chromosome in a girl may result in her having different eye colors in each eye.

So, i'm wondering if you guys have had your chromosomes done and what are they.

lol, sorry guys. I guess i jumped the gun on this one. in fact, i did jump teh gun a little way too quick 'cause the report isn't mine. i mean, it doesn't belong to me because the information about me on there is wrong. the report has my blood type being AB, i'm not that. i also don't have a middle name, which this person has. and lastly i'm not quite as old as her. I'm sending the report back today and i'm gonna have a long talk with my doctor, whom it seems didn't check out the report fully as he was suppose to.

It's funny though because last night after i did a little research on xxy, i found out that it's actually not a very good combo to have and than i was thinking of rachel, 'cause it's very funny. The info i found on xxy is quite startling and ironicly funny and i keep thinking of what rachel said.
