Hmm good points there.
Upon reflection, I think that maybe you might want to look at some of the longer (yet successful) music videos from contemporary artists.
All of the ones that I've seen that are successful have a sort of mini-movie feel about them. Think about that Thriller video by Michael Jackson. Sure, the dialog was horrible, the acting stilted, and the idea of MJ on an actual date laughable, but it still remained very popular for years. Wasn't it on the order of about 15 minutes long? 'Remember the time' (my project) is nearly as long for the extended version. There are others of a similar nature, but the only stuff that comes to mind is Michael Jackson since I've been looking at his stuff for my current project.
As for combining music, it can work, take .Skyfire: The need for Speed or, Otohiko: Wasteland, where he added his own stuff. Both of these examples are fairly long, yet felt much shorter. In fact, wasteland is actually best veiwed on a two loop pass, since the end and intro mesh so smoothly; effectively doubling it's length.
Where does an 11+ minute AMV rate on the ambition scale?

Hmm, actually, to make a short note - there's no combining music or any alteration of the actual live DVD audio source involved there, save the volumemadbunny wrote: As for combining music, it can work, take .Skyfire: The need for Speed or, Otohiko: Wasteland, where he added his own stuff. I'm hoping to go into the 11-minute territory myself, eventually, since this is where several of my most favorite music pieces/songs are at. The reason I'm holding off is actually not so much the length, but the complexity and organization of said music...

As for how to work well with long videos: well, the most important thing here, as everywhere, is logic. On one hand, you need to have a good variation of scenes, characters, themes, etc. to keep a viewer interested. On the other hand, it's a bad idea to throw them all in at random. Find patterns, or develop them yourself. Don't skip between scenes, but don't keep one scene on for too long. Make sure you try to keep it visually fresh all the way through. That's the reason many long multi-editor projects work - they're divided into even, distinct segments, which change regularly both in terms of the footage and the editing/effects style.
My impression is that longer videos require a bit more planning than shorter ones. So, plan ahead...
Other than that, I don't think it should be any problem for anyone. It's not impossible at all even for a complete beginner. Heck, the first video I ever tried to do was almost 7 minutes
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Why is it that you always have to choose DBZ as an example?pen-pen2002 wrote:The reason people are wary of long videos is that they are often made with little editing. Hey if someone is going to rip an episode of DBZ and make a music video using 10-20 second clips, why not make it 25 minutes?
For me personally, the 11 min. vid. could have most chances to succeed if it's consisted of multiple different songs (like Urban Ragnarok for example) and edited differently in particular areas. That way, it's like watching 2 or 3 different videos in one breath. Just a theory though. Like Seph. said: "Just dew it!".

This particular one has a reason for being mentioned. It is reference to the perfect example of everything not to do when making a long AMV. Here's the link: The Best DBZ Vid EVAR!!bote wrote:Why is it that you always have to choose DBZ as an example?pen-pen2002 wrote:The reason people are wary of long videos is that they are often made with little editing. If using 2 songs, an 11-minute AMV isn't impossible, far from it. Just really difficult to make a good one. Make sure to do some good planning first, or you'll get lost halfway through and either get frustrated and give up, or end up with crap. Good start is to study some other long AMVs, see the good and bad aspects. I started a thread on the subject a few months back, bunch of examples given: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/phpBB/v ... hp?t=27836
I have a very long AMV project planned, but with a single song. It will be 15 minutes+ when I finish, but I have a concept of what it'll be about and ideas on how to keep it from getting boring. I also know this project will take at least a year to complete, likely longer. I'm doing it to challenge myself more than for others to enjoy, but if it's liked, then that's just great. You'll do best if you make this a video you will enjoy, rather than trying to please everyone else.

It will be hard to keep the viewers' attention. Animix is 45+ minutes long but changes song every minute or so. Another problem is your OWN interest. You're gonna have to put a lot of time into one video. You might burn out once the initial rush goes out of your system.
This is a painlessly short sig.

I use DBZ as an example because it's the only one I've seen go over 20 minutes...
I don't know that you have to use two songs, if you find one song with enough variety. Anyways, thanks for the link to the other topic, lots of good stuff there. If you are still interested in longer AMV's keep an eye out for InstruMentality: Fantasia. It's the first of a number of multi editor projects using intrumental songs, which tend to be longer than your average AMV fare. The Wasteland (HIGHLY recomended) is over 7, mine is around 7:10, Rose4Emily's clocks in at 13:37. Even the shorter ones tend to be around 5 minutes, and there are some still in progress that I'm not sure about as far as final runtime goes.Captain Tylor wrote:If using 2 songs, an 11-minute AMV isn't impossible, far from it.
