All right. end the fighting, make love not war, bla bla bla...
The problem with something like Jesus Christ Superstar isn't that it's not "real opera" (since, though it certainly isn't traditional opera it still technically fits the bill of expressing all dialog by means of song - kinda the opposite of rap, in a way). It's that it is in English, which really makes it very much not instrumental or even psuedo-instrumental for a listener fluent in English. It would make a cool non-instrumental project, and I encourage you to go ahead with it, it's just not what we're doing. There is someone else planning to do the entirety of Pink Floyd's "The Wall" (which could also be considered an opera of sorts, except that it's composed primarily of soliloquies) - and I think there could easily be another project series for classic rock albums to mirror this one.
Last I could recall, I actually liked Tommy. Now, if I could only remember Who wrote it....
Besides, how can you mock Tommy without going after The Grand Illusion too? C'mon, Styx had a nice sound and all, but the concept seems a bit flat.
Anyhow, the "Around the World in 80 Minutes" and "Of Man" projects seem to be the winners at this point in terms of both how many people are likely to agree with them and how solid a conception I have of how they should be done. I might add that, though I had thought of something geographical for the the narrative portion of "Around the World", the bit with the maps following Jules Verne's journey is brilliant - it'd give it a nice "old movie" feel and provide some real structure and (gasp - dare I say) a plot to the whole thing.
What I've decided at this point is to run both the "Around the World" and "Of Man" projects concurrently, as I think each complements the other musically and thematically without too much overlap. It'll be a few days before I finish the guidelines, and I might have to establish specific upload and download hours where my computer has to come with me to the office, but we should be under way soon.
And so it is that I say that unless you have something REALLY important to say, this thread is dead. The real project threads will be up when I have the guidelines pages and directory tree set up for the new projects.
