Re: Vent Thread

Re: Vent Thread
Been having internet issues for the past couple months, or longer, but recently it's been worse. At times, frequently, the connection drops to a download of like 10-50 kbps (maintaining an upload of 1+ mbps) or lower. Makes it so I can't even watch streaming video without a 20 minute show taking 30-40 minutes.
Charter came out and checked things and said we're getting a strong connection from Charter (supposed to be a 10 Mbps line), so the issue is probably the modem/router which we bought to avoid the extra $10/month fee. I think it could also be my wireless card, or the fact that we have three wireless connections in the house. Judging from the fluctuating success of the connection, maybe modem/router makes sense (it's a Motorola SURFBoard SBG900). It doesn't seem to matter what time of day, or how many active connections there are in the house. But the modem's not shutting off or restarting. And I'm not very knowledgeable about broadband topics. Apart from the many things I've read about modems/routers/connections, I haven't had much experience working with problems.
Could also be my wireless card, I suppose, but every device in the house has issues at times. I don't have a cable long enough to reach my room, but I'm only maybe 30-40 feet away from the modem. Mine does seem to have the most issues, though, I think.
I can probably return this modem, but to what end? Maybe it's not the issue. Maybe the next one will be just as bad. Anyone have any input, related experience, etc.?

Kusoyaro: We don't need a leader. We need to SHUT UP. Make what you want to make, don't make you what you don't want to make. If neither of those applies to you, then you need to SHUT UP MORE.

Re: Vent Thread
Basic debug principles dude... Step 1. Direct connection wired to the modem. Do a speed test. If that shows stable, do it again from the other side of the router.

If you have multiple wireless, make sure they are all working on different wireless channels, and then make sure each channel is a good distance apart from the others. I find that solves most issues (speed, intermittent connection, ect) with related to wireless.

Also, if you live in a congested wifi area, consider installing DD-WRT or similar and broadcasting your wifi on non-US parts of the spectrum.ngsilver wrote:If you have multiple wireless, make sure they are all working on different wireless channels, and then make sure each channel is a good distance apart from the others. One day away from work. Walk upstairs to find my desk PACKED with stuff. I never realized everything I do in a day and what other people can't do without me. O_o

I used to work in hospital archives a couple of years ago and had the exact opposite problem: I could take off like 2 or 3 days without some people even realizing that I've been awayCodeZTM wrote:One day away from work. Re: Vent Thread
big fight with Jaimee... naturally I'm in the wrong and I fully admit it. But it's less one of those fights about who's right and more one of those fights over the way things are and such...
