Okay, I know I already have a few of you laughing or shouting "what a f***ing noob!" but I want to know. I thought that it was an encoder of some kind. I don't know what it does except it will play video files for me that no other player will. So if that's all, then cool, but if it does more, great.

DivX is a codec, a COmputer driven DECoder. Meaning, what the computer does is uses the codec files (once installed) to do it's primary job, decode a video that was made to use the DivX codec. Alternatively you can also encode with the DivX codec. This is highly suggested <b>for your final cut</b> though it requires that the person wanting to decode the video must have the DivX codec installed on their machine.

that is the simple definition (actually the first sentance would have been all that was required but HEY! I'm feeling generous today) and I'm wondering why, in 15 responses nobody really answered the question, <b>What do you use DivX for?</b>.

personally I was never comfortable with the DivX 5 codec until recently cuz you couldn't play DivX 5 files with the DivX 4 codec... but now I'm sure that alot of ppl have DivX5 so no need to worry anymore ;-p

Divx² - Divx 5 - Xvid - Divx 4 - Alpha3.11 - Mpeg - avi & mov

in that order are the best Video Compression CODEC's currently in use.

the best is Divx² but it is only used for commercail encodes,
and the worst file compression is avi & mov "alone!" wwith no compression

Q: what is Divx ?

A: the idea had been around for a long time but never implamented:
if you take moving pictures and place them one-by-one, you have an
avi-or-mov(ie). Mpg was designed to remove the "common parts",
the parts of the picture that normally do not change in a video, and
only update the eyes & mouth movements; it failed, however - it was
not a total loss in the design of why it worked, just in its concept!
Divx is the best of Full Motion Video and Mpeg combined together.

viv - rm - wmf - asf & fm are Over-Kill-Extreames of Video compression.
these Videos are small but almost un-watch-able.

mpg - avi & mov are very clean and clear but HUGE hard-drive hog's!

Divx is a Video Format that is setting the standards for Internet sharing:
1) it is very well tested.
2) people like us, who use Divx, are very informed of "how it works."
3) it is very easy to use.
4) it can be returned into its original form ( un-compressed video )

Divx IS one of the most useful ways of sending and recieving home made
video's to friends and kewlest way to to share ideas that I know of

oh post it got it (sort of...) my faith in the org has been restored HALLELUYAZ!!

The best video codecs out there are
RealVideo 9, XviD, DivX 5, and DivX 3.11

in no particular order, because all 4 are very very similar when used properly. I prefer Real 9 and XviD

the best audio codecs out there:
RealAudio 8, Vorbis, and AAC in order from best to worst

real audio 64 kbps ~ vorbis 96 kbps ~ aac 128 kbps
sorry Real haters, but the above is true, I've done a lot of tests.

There are several formats/containers to use the above in, I personally use
XviD and Vorbis in an ogg media file (.ogm or .ogg)
XviD and AAC in an mpeg 4 file (.mp4)
and obviously RealAudio and Video in a RealMedia file (.rm/.rmvb/.smil)

forgot to mention Real will suck the life out of you, even worse than Apple.

What about DivX5.02? Umm... Let's see:

- It's a mpeg4 type of codec (meaning it's good for Internet distribution)
- Much faster than WMV8.
- It's very popular. You don't have to worry about compatibility issue. It can be played on Windows, Mac, Linux, PocketPC, Dreamcast, XBOX, PS2, and now is coming to GameCube! (that is, if someone managed to create a universal player based on its SDK)
- It's free for viewers and personal use. But if you want to go commercial/try the pro version, you'll have to pay for the software. T_T
- I had achieved very good results encoding videos in DivX5.02, from 180x120 to 720x480, from low bitrates to very high. My conclusion is DivX5.02 produces extremely good quality for hi-res video (if done correctly, of course)

I am liking the XviD :O

I like teh codec because there is no commercial company behind it trying to make a buck. I don't like Ogg Vorbis either. LAME MP3= teh l33t and it has more support.

Xvid owns! been using it lately and i have had 0 problems. i think divx 5 and 4 sucks btw. Xvid all the way 8)

I agree, XviD owns. Not on slow computers like mine though. Everything becomes out of synch and crap. The only things DivX 4/5 are good for are the playback filters, since if you change the XviD FourCC to something other than XVID it will playback with only DivX 4/5 installed.
