AMV suggestion ^_^

You know, the idea of this project has grown on me enough that I'd be willing to serve as coordinator. I have an FTP server running on my computer that is usually online and that I believe I can allow write permissions on, so I could use that as a place for the project clips to be collected, submitted, and distributed. I am a bit new to video editing in terms of time (I've been making AMVs for about a month) - but have made quite a few videos so far and learned from each one - and feel a few of mine are quite good. As an critic, however, I've been at it for a long time with both music and film, so I should be fairly well-qualified to direct the overall framework of the project and give participants advice on their individual sections. I do like the idea of using an original, or at least partially original selection of songs and setting up a "narrator" (though I think it might be interesting if someone really good with lip-syncing volunteered to make an animated narrator section out of a scene with somenone standing before a large screen or blackboard or some other object that I can mask to show sections of the main video through - the actual audio, of course, being a recording made just for the project describing the sections and the thought behind them).
I'll get to work on reconfiguring and testing my FTP server so I can take incoming files, and would like to make a request for posts with suggestions for classical or traditional asian music that can be used for the project.
I'll also get to work on combing through my own music collections in search of such pieces that really bring pictures to my mind.
Once we have decided on a set of music to choose from, work can begin on establishing the structure and order of the overall piece and assigning segments to people interested in working on them.

Once I am set up to handle the project on a technical level, I will start a new and more clearly labeled thread in hopes of more people finding it. I will also set up a page on my website where I will post the latest information on and guidelines for the project.
On songs, there are a few that really stick out to me as possibilities:
Debussy - Reverie (I think this one would work beautifully with Haibane Renmei, and claim it for myself)
Chopin - Raindrop Prelude
Saint-Saens - Aquarium (from Carnival, a beautiful and flowing orchestral piece)
That's what I have so far.

(If anyone's ever been to Epcot (formerly EPCOT Center) at Walt Disney World and seen the film Impressions de France, this is the second piece used in the film, after Debussy's flute solo "Syrinx". However, my family always hears it and thinks Disney used it for the prologue of Beauty and the Beast, even though the two songs are different...)

oddly enough - that's where i first heard the song.
i just loved it so much that after the show i went and asked one of the nice ladies working there what it was, and sure enough, "aquarium".
it's kinda of funny to know that someone else noticed it in the same show at the same place. one of those "small world" things to continue the disney theme.

i used the wmm for a while myself - before switching to linux (and, conincidentally, before making my first amv). it should work fine if you throw over a high-bitrate wmv, as i have some great tools on my end for converting formats - provided not too much of the video information has been stripped out by compression.
the real challenge is going to be getting the exchange to work in the first place. i've discovered that, thanks the design of the university network i'm on, my IP is a bit of a moving target - so i'd essentially have to keep posting new ftp addresses every time i disconnect or reboot my computer (which, as a laptop, is at least once a week). consequently - if anyone else out there has a linux desktop machine with an ftp server installed, it might be a help to the process. if not, i'll just have to find a workaround.
in the mean time, i'll finish the project page and post it to my website. i can link to my ftp from there and update that link from time to time if i have to - just realize that there might be a bit more downtime than you would experience from a dedicated, professionally administered server.

Damn. Like you I just saw Haibane Renmei and absolutely loved it. I've already ripped the DVD's and I'm searching frantically for a good song, preferably instrumental. Is it possible to do two AMV's with the same anime in a project? If not I may still be interested but I'd have to check out some of the suggestions and see what I can come up with.rose4emily wrote: Debussy - Reverie (I think this one would work beautifully with Haibane Renmei, and claim it for myself)

help is welcome from anyone who wants to give it.
i almost have all the necessary technical junk out of the way, so the project should be underway by the end of this weekend.
and i don't see any special problem with using the same anime twice. we might want to try to avoid the re-use of incredably recognizable scenes (like, say, the matrix-kiss from flcl or, as one person put it, the "infamous window scene" from cowboy bebeop), but there are definately some series like haibane and tutu that seem especially well suited to classical instrumental videos and contain plenty of material to go around. besides, yoshitoshi abe is an absolute genous with respect to his artwork, so i don't think the audience would easily tire of it.
if anyone has an idea for a song/anime pairing, please post it to either suggest or claim it, along with any details you might have for specific scene choices and so forth.
i think we might all have to do some tweaking to our individual segments to help ensure the continuity o the whole, but overall it seems to make sense to think of this as a collection of shorts, like fantasia, than as a single film.
i also have decided that i won't be making a list of allowed/disallowed anime for this project. if you think you can somehow pull off something that works with dragonball z, then go ahead and try it. i can't garuntee that every submission will make it into the final project (as it will need to meet certain space and time constraints to be downloadable, and it would only be fair to the people who put some real effort into this to group them with other people who put real effort into this), but i will consider anything that is submitted with as little prior bias as possible.
it should also be pointed out that not every submission had to be done with pure beauty in mind. classical music is wide enough a field to ecompass quite a bit of action and comedy as well, and think it would only be fair to allow the same of this project, especially where an occasional mood shift will help to keep listeners attentive and on their toes waiting to see what comes next.
no one should exclude themselves from this project because they feel they don't have the experience or the right style to handle it. as i've said before, if it works, i'll put it in, regardless of who made it or how closely it matches my own video-making style or taste in music or anime. not to mention the fact that i've only been at this for about a month, so i'd be hard pressed to find someone who's more of a newbie (at least in terms of time) than me.
finally: some inspiration pieces that i think you might want to see before beginning work on the project (and that i might ask about including if we come up a bit short on material)

hopefully these will serve as illustrations of some of the possibilities of instrumental videos. if you know of any more great examples, please post links and share.
