It really depends, if you plan your video well you'll spend a bunch of time planning and you might slap the video together in no time. Whereas you could do it on inspiration alone and be done quickly or slowly depending on if stuff works and then there's the time your willing to spend fine-tuning. I spent half a year on my only vid and I rushed it to make a con and it still looks like cow turd, so time is no good indication for how good something will be, just start and you'll stop when it's done, easy as pie...

I'm sorta a enwbie, sorta not. I made AMVs about 3 years ago, quit, and am starting up again. It's a whole new ball game now. The process can be cut considerably if you have the anime on yer HD in DiVX format, you can then use Premiere to clip it right there, no capturing (this is why i got back into it :D ) My latest video, A Thoughtless AMV, is what i consider pretty phat, yet that only took 2 days, 17 hours, on a 1.3 GHz machine, yet 3 years ago that would have taken like a week to get shitty draft, like a few months to perfect. It's all about the planning, some plans come to you quickly such as A Thoughtless AMV, while other will take a while to cultivate and will change midway. But if you stumble onto somethign good you'd be surprised how quickly it comes along.

It varies a lot for me. The quickest video I ever made took about 3 hours. This was my Kryptonite video, and the reason it went so quickly was because I knew exactly which clips I'd be using, and all of them came from just four episodes of Eva.

The longest it's taken me is about a week. My Steam and Aenema videos took that long, partly because both songs are 6 minutes long.

Ok so a good "Contest Winning" AMV could take up to say a couple of weeks and month's while a good.. and plain amv could take up to say less than a week or even a couple of day's right??? So how do I really know when I've maid a "Contest Winning" AMV even if it does sorta tell me "yeah that's what I want, and how i wanted it" what else should I do before I make it final, and most importantly does a song play role in this, would a slow song be harder to make or fast past kind, sorta like trance or new age... and can some post a couple of contest winning amv's for both drama, and action

No. Stop. Do not pass Go, do not collect $200. This is not about creating 'Contest Winning' AMVs, it's about sharing your vision with other people. If you're in this to win contests, you're really in it for the wrong reason.

bottom line, I think that there is about as much in the concept as there is in the exacution, an even 50 50.

From what I have learned, as long as the AMV is an inspired one that you have fun making, and the song fits the type of video you are trying to make well enough the creation process with take care of itself.
(At least that is the way it goes for me when I try to make a good AMV.)

the give an example I made an AMV taking place from the POV of the stalker in perfect blue. The song I chose was beutiful disaster by 311. The song beutiful disaster fit the type of AMV I was trying to make well because The theme of the song fit the type of video I was trying to make. Total production time, 14 hours.

The best AMV's are the ones that are inspired, and I am enthousiastic about making. And if the song and theme of the AMV fit well enough together (this is from personal experience) the clips just seem to fall into place. When I was making the AMV to my favite song I used Knockin on heavens door. And I knew the song so well that I actually got the punches and kicks to match up with every note of the music.

I guess that I am trying to say basicaly is to

A. have the best song possible to match up with the theme of your AMV and

B. have as much fun as possible making the AMV

At least I think that is whats important to making a good AMV, am I wrong?

of course there are exeptions to any rule, look at tainted donuts for example, the song isn't even english but the music video is still one of my favorites.
