Re: Is anime a "lonely" hobby?
Completely not! I'm living in Poland, it's well... not the bigest country in Europe, and we don't have so much anime and manga in shops like guys from USA. And I think that people here are not so open minded for that kind of art and I know people who never heard about manga stuff but hey! I have a lot of friends which ones are manga fans too. I've never feel lonely with my hobby. Ten years ago it was harder, there were few titles of manga avaliable in Poland and much less fans, but these times were good too. We felt so, you know, special with our little precious xD! Anyway I don't think it's a lonely hobby. And if you feel so, go on some manga convention or expo. It's so much fun and a lot of great people! You're not alone at all ^^!

Actually, yes it is. However, I'm starting high school, which means a fresh start. So, I'm planning on creating an anime club for whoever wants to join at my high school, so let's hope for the best ^_^

Re: Is anime a "lonely" hobby?
In general, I think it is a lonely hobby. Even though my husband's friends (which happen to be the only people I hang out with) are all into anime, once I try to talk to people outside of those 3 or 4 guys, it's like another realm. Anytime I mention "anime" people ask "What is that?" My mom thinks it's a bad habit or something, not proper for adults. I tend to get very excited about the videos I make and it's hard for me to share them with other people, because they just don't understand. It's not like art or chess or movies or something that even if people aren't interested in it, at least they know what you're talking about.

My entire family and most ppl I meet are VERY tolerant (to say the least) of anime... I just... don't share *_*

You do realize I was joking, correct?Knowname wrote:seriously I would be embarrassed to be around you o.0 lol... not that it wouldn't be fun, Your personality is just the exact opposite of mine.
In all seriousness, I first convince people I'm normal, personable, cool guy. After that gets imprinted on their minds, I can feel free to at least be open about, well, any of my nerdy hobbies. Though still without harping on them.
Remember, you define the impression of the hobby, not vice-versa (insofar as the two are separate things) If you're a personable guy. People aren't going to go "Oh look, he watches anime, what a nerd." They're going to go "he's a pretty cool guy, oh look, he watches anime too. That's coo' "
Or somesuch.

and I totally agree.
Its only as lonely as you want it to be, I didn't flaunt that I love anime or whatever in High School so I was never called a nerd or anything like that.
Nor was I ashamed to bring up the fact that I do like anime, if someone really cared to ask about my hobbies or what I like to watch I told them.
I knew of about quite a few people in a school of about 300+ that liked anime, and a few I convinced to watch the stuff.
The main anime nerd stereotype I've seen in my last couple years of school was the Naruto head-band shit from Hot Topic =\ and quite honestly it was dumb.
Those were the "anime nerds" that people laughed at and "didn't have any friends".
And no I'm not dissing you if you Cos-Play, I'm just saying in general that the head-band thing was lame.

It's not really lonely, however there are some places where it can be, unfortunately.

Wow. My hat is off to the creator of this thread.
Only ever started flamebait threads (and posted only one reply on any of them) in the two weeks he was here and hasn't ever visited the site again since then, but somehow one of those topics STILL HAS PEOPLE TALKING SIX MONTHS LATER.
