Since the parallel to defining art was drawn, the same problem exists there. Modern artists concerned more with their own popularity by being strange and different and "pushing boundaries" have broadened the definition so much that it's a useless label that applies not only to every thing, but every action.

I suppose a better criticism to make, therefore, would be that a video lacks a solid or readily definable concept, not one entirely.

Alternatively, because we all like analogies, what would you consider a 3 year old with a crayon is doing? We have a word we can use, drawing, that implies some sort of focused intent and another word, scribbling, that implies a lack of focused intent. I use the example of a 3 year old here to make it painfully simple (they lack the focused intent to be drawing), but anyone can choose to draw or to scribble. Ascetically, drawing is more pleasing to a viewer than scribbling would be, and some people completely suck at drawing so it doesn't make much of a difference which they're doing - the end product is a mess.

Judging by the amazing powers of mental prowess I'm seeing in this thread, I think some people would just be eating the crayon though... :|

I disagree, because you can come up with a concept while editing, thus many IC videos were born.

To be fair, you kinda BS your way through things like ICs and hope nobody notices.

I donno one of my ICs (not an official contest, mind you) I actually came up with a concept on the spot O.O Of course in that particular case "random pretty scenes" beat out my concept anyway O:

In my earlier post I was trying to point out that the question whether an AMV has a concept or not is not really relevant. But, if I should play along with your analogy, I would say why should I care whether the 3-year-old's drawings are art or not. It's merely a question of definition, which doesn't really concern any substantial matters. If I like the drawing, then I like the drawing, and whether it's art or not shouldn't really make a difference. Although, I once read about a child painter (about 5 years old or something) whose paintings were extremely expensive but when it turned out that her father had been giving her instructions all the time the price of the paintings dropped significantly. Such information ruined the "authenticity" (whatever that's supposed to mean) of these works. In other words that "it" what these paintings had in the minds of the public disappeared, even though the paintings were technically exactly the same as before. In the same way when we're talking about concepts we're not really talking about the AMVs themselves but that extra surplus value that we invest in them when we edit or that we look for when we watch AMVs. It's all very vague and subjective but I have no problems with that. It's just good to take this into account if you're gonna say something about concepts.

Back to actual flaws.

1) I am incapable of using straight to black fades. They REALLY bother me. :uhoh:
2) Every time I try to beat sync, I end up having a small conniption fit that it's not any good and go back to lyric/mood sync. :(
