Irresponsible Captain Tylor is good for an amusing pseudo-space drama. If you can get the digisubs, "Azumanga Daioh" is a funny series. It's based off a 4-panel comic strip, and is about 7 high school girls, their teachers, and their day to day lives. The series' strength lies in its characters and voice acting.
I'm out...

Let's see, Gasaraki is good if you're looking for a mecha show with a lot of drama. Betterman has sort of a Godzilla, (Gojira for those of you who insist on accuracy 8) ), vibe to it at times, but I like it so far. For comedy, you can't beat Saber Marionette J in my book.
I also second the recommendations for Excel Saga and Boogiepop Phantom. Although entirely different, both are great shows in their own right.

You forgot to mention that IT'S INSANELY FUNNY and greatly made! The dub is so amazing too! If you haven't seen my many reviews of Excel Saga, just check out my forum "The Ultimate Anime Battle : Dubbed Vs Subbed"Chaos Angel wrote:Every episode of Excel Saga is a parody of something. Horror films, war films, Power Ranger-style kids shows, etc. Also, the series is hyper-caffeinated and full of assorted wierdness.
The first two volumes are out on DVD. There's 26 eps of insane-goodness. It's great if you love crazy, wierd stuff.
26 eps on the first two volumes? Don't you mean 9 eps on the first two volumes? Oh wait.. you meant 26 eps total... didn't you?
I also heard that Dragon Half is very funny as well. Despite it's 1993 date.

Gundam. anything Gundam. except, of course, for the original MS Gundam and Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, which both suck.

I've only seen the Toonami Gundams, and I didn't see too much of Stardust Memory (I stopped watching Saturday Nights for the most part.). However, based off what I have seen, 8th MS Team is my recommendation for a Gundam series. I absolutely loved it.
I should get that and GW on DVD... (GW was second).
