Makes sense, godix. From what I can tell, the same skills are used in actual editing as in picking apart someone elses editing.

Hey,

I think anyone at anytime can give an opinion regardless of their "worth." Even if the opinion is pure rubbish, there's some value to it, although it boggles my mind as to how it can be worth anything.

Naturally, opinions are opinions, purely dependent on the person's mood, history, and character. If an opinion is crap, than it's crap and it should be treated as such. Certainly, it'll smell when in the proximity of your possessions, but you'll get use to it.

personally, besides my free ops thread, my rule of thumb is: I only op if I have something to say about it. Therfore I don't op some of my favorite vids, because I don't see anything wrong to comment about, nor anything definite to say that was what made the video good, it's just instinct or something.

I'm getting better at giving ops, I think, and it's not just that my usefulness is rising. I feel that I know more what I'm talking about, and I think it may help my editing (which admittedly could use a little work).

Also a good op doesn't depend solely on the word count. I've gotten an op that just went off on a rant, or potentially a positive (but unhelpful) op could just, say, heap on 100+ words of praise, or ramble on about unrelated topics.

Same here...rather than give that all 10 "OMG UR VID ROCS! ></m\!!" op like I did when I first started here  I've learned that just dropping the creator a PM or email on a vid that you really liked works just as well, or star ranking it high..something along those lines.

I usually go for the utilitarian approach: long or short, say something about something the AMV maker might actually be able to put to use.

(Hypothetical) examples:

"That scene was kind of grainy; it could have used a softening filter."
"I really liked that scene with the chicken and the waitress holding the grapefruit. I nearly fell off my chair laughing."
"I'm not sure why, but the way you combined that bit with the guy kicking the garbage can in frustration and the violins really got to me."
"What the *&$@ was with that joke about the rabbi and the girdle salesman?"
"The scenes with the guy running from the toilet plunger were fine, but the guys you showed as the backup choir really strained credibility."
"Well, it's a great video, but maybe you should warn people about the dangers of showing this to their straight-laced neighbors."
"Ummm... Trigun is a screed for gun control? I don't think so..."
"Well, I don't think it comes off looking this way, but in the description, you made it sound as if a giant plastic Moses were going to jump out and start preaching at us in this AMV like the one in Flanders' theme park in the Simpsons episode. You might want to change that so that people don't get put off by it."
"There's some damage at 3:48. I thought it was just a download glitch, but I've downloaded it several times and it's in every copy. I recommend repairs for the video."
"That bumper was annoying and really seemed to get in the way. If you have to have it, move it to the end."
"Wow, your portrayal of Santa Clause looks like the product of a disturbed mind... More, please!"
"Please don't put any more Iron Maiden guitar riffs at the end of your Enya AMVs... those really get on my nerves."

Examples

Those are very specific examples, Rorschach. Are those some of the comments you've posted, or are they off the top of your head...? (You're very witty, either way. ^^)

Shuichi: I take it all back!! You're evil!! Ohhh, PHONY!! You make HITLER look like a BUS CONDUCTOR!! (But I still love you *heart*)
Eiri: (Mmmm. I like it.) Ha-ha-ha! Crawl to me, you insignificant worm!

"Face it, Eiri. You can go anywhere. I don't care if it's Kyoto or the Amazon Rainforest -- I'd walk the world to make you fall for me."

I've been making vids since December of 03, and what I've learned is this. The better you get at making videos, the more you notice in the videos you watch, which can allow you to make better ops on peoples vids. When I first started making videos is really when I first started oping. I've gone back and watched a few videos that I oped in the past, and I have noticed numerous other problems that weren't mentioned simply because I didn't have the know how. I've seen a lot of amvers like that *self included*. I bet if I watched a video now that I thought was awesome, oped it, and looked at it in 2 or 3 months, I'd see a whole new set of things that could use some work. The same with my old videos, it's like everyone else. I look at some of my old stuff and almost shudder at some of the easily fixable mistakes. I would be surprised and astonished if a person can be found that can honestly say that a past video is perfect. Of course there we have it again, its all opinion. And as the amver grows, so do the opinions. Opinions grow the knowledge of making a work. The more know how a person has, the more they can appreciate, or not appreciate a video and thats where I feel opinions come from. There are no wrong or right opinions (unless a person is lieing to themselves). Opinions are only opinions. They aren't dogmatic law, and aren't some sort of creed. They are a persons feelings, in this case, about amv's. I don't like the fact that we have number scores, its hard to give numbers on some amv's. I don't really pay much attention to the numbers on ops i've recieved; instead i look closely at what is written (assuming there is more than 10 words) and better myself. And that is my opinion on opinions.

Some of each, actually. Some of them are also from opinions I got on my AMVs (which is one reason why my Boogiepop Phantom AMV description section comes with a disclaimer. No, the guy didn't compare the original AMV description to the giant Moses figure from the Simpsons episode, but that was more or less what I figured he meant.) As far as I know, there has never been an anime with a guy being chased by a toilet plunger; I made that up off the top of my head. I have often suggested to AMV makers that they use a softening filter, though.

As has been said, anyone can be "qualified" to give an op. Personally, though, I don't read what the creator wrote about the video until after I've watched it several times. That way I can formulate my own opinions on what I think they were trying to do, etc.

I think as long as you're trying to help the creator improve, and you're fair, there are no bad opinions.
Another pointless post!

Crzy_Tetsuo - Your right and I have noticed that phenominon(sp).

I go through some of the "My First Videos" types and I can go through and pick out all the bad spots and mistakes I have made in the past or I am now anal retentive about fixing.

But - There are videos that are just outside of my experience for reviewing and I cant see the mistakes or "cheat" effects to hide blurbs or non-sequenced immages. It's frustraiting for most of the 1:1 guys that I have run into are well beyond my personal ability to give usuable reviews.

ehh... Least I realize now how just gosh darn AWFUL my first two videos were.

=)
Annoying, obnoxious and opinionated.
