We are the collective mind.
Originality is futile.
Your AMV will be assimilated.
We will add whatever distinctiveness it might have to our own.

Yeah, I guess that sums up my ideas on originality. Which is why I usually give 9's and 10's...because it doesn't really matter :?

Oh, and here's something for those of you who are apt to take what I wrote far too seriously.

DISCLAIMER
The Surgeon General has determined that prolonged serious analysis of written material on the Web can cause you to look stupid, especially when the writer is completely indifferent to your opinion on said written material. For the love of Pete, people, it's a freaking Web forum. Take it with a gallon of Morton Salt if you have to. Just be aware that ingestion of said quantity of Morton Salt may lead to hypertension and/or severe dehydration.

I ask two questions with simple yes/no answers: Have I seen this idea before? If I heard just the song could I guess with high accuracy which anime it was paired with? These two questions determine if I give originality a high score or a low one.

I don't care how well it's done, a Linkin Park song to Cowboy Bebop is not original. I may give it a 10 in everything else, it may be the best damned linkin park/cowboy bebop AMV around, I may even go so far as to claim it is the best video I've ever seen but I'm not going to consider it an original idea. Along with this goes the style of the video. If someone makes an effects video that makes me think 'Hey, he stole that from Euphoria' I'm going to consider it an unoriginal idea even if it's done well and uses a different anime/song.

Similarly, if I hear a song on the radio and go 'I bet there will be several AMVs to XYZ anime within a month' I'd consider it unoriginal even if it's the very first AMV to use that combo. Certain combos are just so blatently obvious I can't call it original.

Once I have these questions done with then I go to other criteria. Did the linkin park/cowboy bebop use the same clips everyone else used or did they find other source? Was it a Euphoria knockoff the entire time or was it a few effects here and there? Was that blatently obvious song/anime combo taken in a direction I didn't expect?

The main exception to all this is parodies. IE if a video is making fun of all the countless other DBZ fight videos then I consider it much more original.

And don't forget:

All your idea are belong to us.
You are on the way to conformity.
You have no chance to stand out make your time.

And by the way, it would appear that ".." doesn't work in URLs.

Webster's defines "original" as:
1 : of, relating to, or constituting an origin or beginning : INITIAL <the original part of the house>
2 a : not secondary, derivative, or imitative b : being the first instance or source from which a copy, reproduction, or translation is or can be made
3 : independent and creative in thought or action : INVENTIVE

Going of what Rozard said, don't based originality of genre either... I've seen romance amvs get reduced scores simply due to the fact it was a romance amv :?

yea, i've seen the same thing, "i gave you low originality cuase i hate romance". which is why i don't think of the reviewing system as anything good, except for good feedback. even then, 90% of all ops i get are useless feedback.
