Evangelion is definately NOT an intro-to-anime series. Eva is a real love it or hate it series. Not an ice breaker.
Oh, you're right. I should've thought about that. So basically, if you watch some other anime first, I'd recommend Eva after that, which is probably a better idea. I did like the series, though, and a lot of people who're into anime do too.

Two animé that truly showcase the beauty and power of the medium, and therefore make a great introduction:

Wings of Honneamise
Grave of the Fireflies

I won't go into lengthy justifications. Let's just say that you have to see them to know why.

What about Cowboy Bebop? That looks really cool from all the AMVs that feature it. Also, what is awesome about Trigun? Is it just really cool high tech stuff?

Thanks for everyone's help.

Cowboy Bebop is pretty good too. It gets better as the series goes along.

Trigun is my favourite anime of all time because:
-It's unique
-The animation is good.
-The dialogue is awesome, especially in the subbed version.
-The plot is intriguing and interesting throughout the entire series.
-The characters are all beleivable and have detailed, interesting personalities (Vash is the greatest!! :) )
-It's captivating! I have watched the series at least 4 times and I've only gotten a few months ago.

If you want to know what it's about, there's a lot of places on the Internet that will tell you. I'd rather not tell you myself because I don't want to give too much away or make it sound worse/better than it really is. I'm afraid I might've done too much of that already. :)

Escaflowne is one of those great-for-newbies animes.

Make sure you show it subbed though because the dub is nightmareish.

Trigun is a sci-fi action/drama/comedy Western, with a bit of steampunk thrown in. It has betrayal, idealogical conflict, lost and found love. It has, as Sierra Lorna, pointed out, great art and good characters. And all of this has propelled it to the top as one of the crown jewels of anime. Definitely worth a watch.

Rurouni Kenshin is also a good one for n00bs. Oh and let's not forget Inu-Yasha, which is gonna start on Cartoon Network on the 30th. Yeah it's dubbed, but it's on american TV and it's an excellent series.
My first anime was Ranma 1/2, which is made by the same person as Inu-Yasha.

once youve seen a few different ones i recommend you see princess mononoke as the animation is absolutlely stunning! Akira is also good if you like that sort of hi tech stuff. I think my first anime was either dbz or eva.
