Remember anything is possible ....
I have made two AMVs which closely follow their narrative ballads.
They are very simple, though... the hard part isn't making them,
but finding a song and an anime which (a) I like, and (b) fit together.
I only started doing this about a year ago, when I became
dissatisfied with making videos which were really ordinary and
obvious. I thought that making strongly story-driven AMVs would
be an interesting niche to explore, and it has been. But it's hard
to keep up, and I don't feel like going back to making "song
says duck/show a duck" types of vids, so I'm curious to see
what other people have done. Since it's not in any "Recommended
AMVs" category I'm asking here, which I'm glad I did because
some suggestions have so far been very good.

Indeed, and my answer to that was:
Well, it is a narrative ballad, and the video fits the humourous tone
of the song (with a not-so-humourous subject). It does as good a
job as possible editing FMA to follow what the song is saying, but
it's a bad fit. A hentai anime would have made more sense in this
case.
Surely there's something better than that, no?
I said that almost any anime could work with any song. You asked for an example, with three parts, which I supplied. Whether or not the anime I chose is what you consider to be the "best" fit (which is all subjective, of course, I find a get quite a variety of responses) I still took an anime and made it fit my purposes, which makes my point. I'll admit it's not the best video in the world, I was still pretty new to editing and that video was made in about three hours, but it's still an example of making an anime fit the song. Now there are plenty of other examples of videos that do the same thing, but there aren't many that are as narrative as you want that come to mind other than what's already been said.

Anyway, Misato would be the mother and Shinji the son. There's a lot of good scenes of the two in a car in the movies with a mood of despair (both of them being depressed or angry and whatnot) that would work well. The "evil man" could be Gendo, which seems almost too obvious. Now I laughed when I saw the lyric "locked outside" and immediately thought of the masturbation scene, but I most definitely think there's enough footage to fill out the song. So the answer to your question is yes.
Maybe, maybe not. Since this AMV does not exist the question
cannot be answered one way or another. Even it you could
shoehorn an anime into a song, though, it means little if the AMV
sucks or is laughable. But I'm not specifically asking for a "go"
AMV, this was just an example.
So, maybe I'm not undestanding this. Your question was: "Could you make an AMV which follows this straightforward story?" My answer was yes, and I explained why I thought so. You say since this video doesn't exist, I can't answer yes or no, but you also say that you're not asking for a video. So, basically, I can answer the question, but my answer doesn't matter because the video isn't made, but you aren't asking for the video to be made? I'm not sure what kind of response you're looking for, then.

Don't take it personally. I'm blunt with my opinions but I didn't
mean to offend you. You did, in fact, make an AMV which is faithful
to the song you chose, and the lip-sync alone would take me more
than three hours.

That was unfair on my part, because the only way to answer the
question was to actually make the AMV, which I wouldn't expect
anybody to do. I apologize for that.

I'll do it if you give me the song.

omg people are thinking too deeply here...

any anime can go to any song... weather it "works" is subjective,

but that doesnt stop people from putting "my humps" to "naruto" O.o

OK! time to pull out the big guns

the very essence of 'whether it works is subjective'. IMO it follows the story word for word... In others opinions (maybe they just don't know the story... if not than just follow the SONG) it doesn't make any damned sense!! ... maybe it correlates with my writing style o.0

(here's where the anime doesn't really matter...)

Heh, I suppose if you used a bad anime with a piss-poor storyline and edited to fit the story of the song you've chosen, you have improved it at least 1000%.
