Upstream/downstream? If you're upstream is less than 160kb, then you're screwed. It will hog all of your bandwidth, and people won't get that good speeds. If 20 people are downloading, then they'll get 8kb download speeds max.

kbps = kilobits per second
KBps = KiloBytes per second

It takes 8 kilobits to equal 1 kilobyte.

OK, let me break it down for you. Basically, servering your video off your computer, unless your going to doing it to one person at a time and only plan to give the IP adress to a few trusted friends...IS A VERY BAD AND IMPRACTICLE IDEA.
You have a 256kb cable connection. Wich means even if it wasnt capped, you wouldnt have that fast an upload. However, its kind of an industry standard that all cable modem upload speeds are capped at 128KB, thats KiloBITS, not Bytes. Thats around 20kbs(Kilobytes) that your gonna be able to get uploading. So. if you only have one person downloading your vid, the fastest that person can get is 20Kbs. Now thats just the speed issue. Since you obviously dont seem to know much about setting up an FTP server, I doubt you know much about setting up a firewall either. If you set up an FTP server and list the adress in any kind of public forum, your opening yourself up to tremendous security riskes. You would be easy prey for even a novice hacker.

So basically, unless your planning only only using this to give the stuff to a few trusted friends, I would not recomend this idea at all, just upload your vid to some other file server.

Unless you have a crappy program, you're not very vurnerable to hax0r attacks. As long as your have your ftp server password protected. You can't firewall ports that need to be open for the ftp to work port 21 + some extra ports. A firewall would not protect you say if your program has a buffer overflow bug in it that allows the hax0rz in.

Firewalls are good monitoring devices to check and see if anyone is trying to hack you or if you just want to keep an eye on what programs you have accessing the net. Other then that it's not gonna do much.

Also I like the KB = KiloBytes since Bytes are BIGGER then bits kilobits ;p

I ran a FTP server off of my 384kilobit dsl connection for months w/o being hax0red. However I did get sick of my games slowing to a crawl when someone would suddenly connnect. Now that I have cable, I decided to just give up on hosting my AMVs and am waiting the donut / a good hosting deal ;|
