had a look at the amv - keep up good work - there were some good scene choices and synch. I can see that you put a good mount of effort into it. Im sure anyone looking for that sort of thing will enjoy it - very watchable. Seriuosly its a very good no-effect action vid. if i saw one cheesy effect in there i might of hated it :p

- in an action amv i think lip flap is a no-no unless theres a reason - i really dislike it.

My fourth video was pimped out by several well-known editors for reasons beyond my comprehension.

Now, there's an oddly large number of people who think I don't entirely suck at this whole fan video thing. It's weird.

I would say do something original, that hasn't been done before or is very rare. Use a song that no one has used, or the idea of the vid. People will want to check it out more if it's something unique.

Hey now, lets not go too far. Having a tit in my mouth 24/7 would be fucking awesome. Shit, I'd be so happy I'd never leave my house or turn on my computer again. You happen to know a woman who's willing?

Anyway, somewhat seriously, my point isn't that popularity sucks or doesn't matter or anything like that. It's that AMVs are a hobby and the entire point of a hobby is to enjoy yourself. If someone requires others attention to enjoy this then they're probably in the wrong hobby. You'd get a lot more attention if you posted self mutilating pictures in an emo LJ group (bonus points for carving interesting stuff in your arm. Straight lines are boring. Try carving papa smurf into your arm instead). I've put my videos on the org because I used to like other people seeing and enjoying them (not that it matters but I've since changed my mind. Only one of my last five solo videos got released because I no longer care about others opinion). It's fine to get that warm fuzzy feeling in your stomach when someone says your video was good (or that warm fuzzy feeling in your loins when they say it's so good that you can suck their tit or whatever other sexual favor you want). That's normal. But to have that be the entire point of making videos? Fuck that shit. Make them because you like to. If other people like it then bonus. If not, well, at least you enjoyed making it.

Suggestion #1: Get people who can beta test for you before you release a video. Oftentimes this will help to improve the video, which makes it that much more likely that people will watch it and spread it to others. However, oftentimes it also has the additional benefit of causing the beta testers to post on your announcement thread when you release the thing, making it look better (as long as they don't hate it, of course).

Suggestion #2:

CONVENTIONS.

I've been saying this for years and it still holds true today as far as I can tell. You get a convenient captive audience (especially for comedies, since nobody skips the comedy category) that can number in the thousands at the bigger cons. Plus, knowing the kind of people who go to cons in the first place, it's highly likely that there'll be at least some who will be highly enthusiastic about spreading the videos around to their friends (or to complete strangers; I've seen quite a few after-con writeups on the 'net that included links to some of the AMVs shown) when they get back.

As just one example, I'm one of the editors who loves to pimp that video of Trythil's that he mentioned on the last page, and I never would have seen it if I hadn't gone to Otakon 2003.
