Situation A
forget the genre, if I think it works, go for it!
Situation B
Live music RAREly works for me, i'd stick with the studio.
What would you do in a situation like this?
Situation C
try it with something else as an experiment, the first song/anime I use will stay as I intened with the other mix as a possible better/alternate project.
( YES, this is what i would do, not as an answer /advice stlye. so, i hope i answered it the way you intended)

A) Stick with the lyrics, style of music can unexpectedly work and be edited around more easily than lyrics that otherwise don't fit with a damn.
B) Use the original, crowd noise would be very distracting both without and with editing to it.
C) Meh, it's fine, I've done AMVs for shows I've only seen one or two episodes of; you don't have to know the context of a scene in order to use it so long as it looks fine in the context of your video.

I’ve started (over the last year) to go the way of looking at the anime more as my pallet, as opposed to an already fully conceived painting. Therefore, in the first case I would say take the version you like and use the anime as you would use paint. Create something new; don’t feel constrained by the original story. In my opinion, if you where just planning to repeat the story of the anime (or subplot), then you have to ask yourself: “What’s the point?” If, I'm doing a "storytelling" AMV I like to add a new element (chaning the story), perspective, or theme to the anime.
As for the live version, it’s your call … it will work depending on what you are trying to create (I used a live version, and you can't tell it for sure till the end ... I liked the version because it felt more organic than the studio version).
In the last case …. Well, see case one … use the anime to create something new …. There are a few very good videos on this site (By people like Vicbond) … that have been done videos without ever having watched the anime.

while I agree, and this was sort of my point of my former post. There are just certain anime that just FEEL like certain genres. Like for my Karin video I linked to, I just KNEW it had a feel for that song. I mean, a love song with guitar rifts HAS TO = a vampire romance. It just has to... Also some ideas I have, I want to make one of those generic tourist trap videos I'd always see growing up in Hawaii, one look at Macross Zero, all it's beauty and nature scenes, I mean... DUH! Another one I like is this country knee slappin' song. If you'd seen Neia_7 it's set in a dirty old country town. It just has that feel. Coarse you still DO gotta' make that lyrical connection somehow, but (or just do an instrumental and hope the viewer feels the connection...). It IS rather easy if you pick it this way. Or you can do it the other way! OR you can do it the traditional way!! Great thing is, THEY ALL WORK! Have fun ;p.The Wired Knight wrote:A) Stick with the lyrics, style of music can unexpectedly work and be edited around more easily than lyrics that otherwise don't fit with a damn.

With situation b i have a particular song i would love to edit to, but there is no "studio recorded" version. There is only a "live" version, that i've been able to find anyway.
So if anyone can find a studio version of "Waiting For You" by Akira Yamaoka. I might send you some cash in the mail...
But i don't know, perhaps in a circumstance like that it's okay to edit to a live version. And there are ways of using the crowd to your advantage.
For example in one of JubJub2's videos "She's Got a Way - Ghibli Girls" she uses the cheering of the crowd as a bumper for her name. So like the crowd is cheering for the "JubJub" logo (which they would). However it only really becomes a problem when the cheering is mid-song. But i've heard of some filters in audio-editting software like 'cool edit' which can apparently remove clapping... though i have no idea how good that would sound, most likely terrible.
Perhaps "Live" was never meant to be editted to.
However if you want a real challenge, try editting live... Craziness...

Hmm...
Situation A
I'd pick A. You can make anything work if you edit it well enough. Picking a song that works better, but is harder to match is a nono for me.. and if all else fails, look for a cover version if there is one and use that instead. The style might be completely different but it might work all the same. ^_^
Situation B
Ditch the idea completely. If I don't like the prospect of working with either a] bland audio or b] concert audio because of complications in editing either way, it's not worth doing imho. Someone else might pull it off.. I know for a fact I won't.
Situation C
I'm working on this scenario! I've got a video in the making that I wanted to make before even watching the series (Please! Teacher) - now that I HAVE watched it through, it works marvellously and even if I am going at a snail's pace, I'm working on it little by little and indend finishing it for at LEAST Summer 2007.
I LOVE the concept and am really really happy that I found a series to match one of my favourites songs ever.
(Though really I guess it just shows how awesome some other amvs are though, eh? Inspiring more amvs from just watching about 4 minutes of footage? That's the kind of video I strive to make, I suppose!)

Situation A: Happened to me. Chose the one I liked better, and then eventually scrapped the project. I usually edit songs anyway, so like Szwagier suggested, cut the bits you don't want, and have at it.
Situation B: Did this one, too, and chose the live version. Luckily, the crowd noise really doesn't happen until the end, so I just used that part for the bumper/credits (as bluetrain pointed out :-*).
If it's a better version live, then I don't see the problem. Not everything in the music needs to be addressed visually.
Situation C: ... Yeah, this one, too. Luckily, it worked out and I found enough scenes to do okay with it. I gotta stop taking dares from JudgeHolden though. >.>

Situation A:
Song 1 - Dont care about it, just use The song and Try to add much effects to let it fit
Song 2 - Who cares? Just use it XD
Situation B:
I would never use a live version of the song if there is a studio-version =/
Situation C:
I already did that in my Ninja Nature AMV. Yes, I've never seen Naruto (Shame on me) XP

Re: Song Choices...
A: Most of the time I would scrap the project, but once in a while I would go with song #2 and use the scenes as is, only if I felt I could barely pull it off.
B: Go with what I find is better, usually studio. If I decided to use a live version, I'd use fade ins/outs on the video if there is nothing but audience noise, use fades on the audio if some of doesn't have anything to do with the song itself (remove any parts of a vocalist just straight talking and combine the audience noise in the gap left over). If both version sound identical in lenght, use both and make two separate videos.
C: Wait until I've seen the series, then make final decision.

A- It depends on the person themselves, if one is better at matching clips with lyrics than SONG 1 is the better choice; and if one is better at matching the clips to the beat of the song than SONG 2 is the better choice
B-If the background noise is louder than the song than go with the album version
C-Just watch at least some of the anime to get a good idea as to what it's about
