Slowdown after synthing - possibly hardware problem ?

Post by Aurelianolegna » Mon Nov 27, 2006 2:35 pm

Hello everyone, new user, yadda yadda.

So, I was following the EADFAG guide (many thanks to their author, which are awesome people), and I've been running some little tests to get the hang of the whole process. During those test, I ran into a problem which I did not find documentation on.

That is, when I convert my files into .avi using VirtualDubMob, the .avi I get is all fine and dandy, except it seems to run on the basis of one half frame each 3 or 4 seconds. That is, of course, a bad thing since it doesn't really look like a video at all.

So, my first conclusion is that I had some kind of hardware problem - that is, the video file was perfectly fine, I just hadn't the power to properly process it. But I'd like confirmation on that, if at all possible.

Problem is, the slowdown also occur on WMM preview option, so it's either a) not as simple as I think, or b) going to be a real pain in the ass to edit.

Is that a frequently encountered problem (or just a stupid question that can easily be answered) ? How could I have a relatively smooth preview so editing will not be a game of guessing ?

I want to note that the .avs file loaded into virtualdubmod play just fines, without any slowdowns. It's really only the .avi file which does that.

Any help appreciated. My PCU is a Pentium 4 2.6ghz with a DDR SDRAM of supposedly 1024mb.

What codec did you save the avi as?

Oh yes, sorry, forgot to specify that !

I used Lagarith, and used both fast and thorough re-compression, but it doesn't seem to have any effect.

Well a lossless encoded file like that is unlikely to be able to play back completely smoothly. When you are editing, it should be very quick and responsive though.

I don't know how much more processing power Lagarith needs than HuffYUV, but I can play back HuffYUV-AVIs smooth with a similar computer (AMD Athlon XP 2600+ instead Intel P4 2.6 GHz). It works well in Mediaplayer and in my editing programm. But it also depends much on the application. With Windows Mediaplayer it plays smooth and causes around 60% CPU-load, in VLC I have 100% CPU-load and of course laggy playback.

As side note, since I run Win2k, I still use Mediaplayer 6.4. But even if you run WinXP, you still have this version on your PC. It's called mplayer2.exe, you'll find it under your windows folder inside the sytem32 folder. Though this will not help you much with your playback problem in WMM, but maybe you can play back your files smoothly at all.

still... those files aren't really designed to play back smoothly in real time, they're designed to edit correctly with.
