Yes VirtualDubMod reads the VOB files with fuzziness.
Melanchthon wrote: and if it is, does the fuzziness come from blurring of the whole picture, or from little blocks and lots of crap around the lines, or from two frames being blended together?
The fuzziness are little scan lines that appear whenever something moves too quickly.
Melanchthon wrote: What files are you working with, anyway? The vobs themselves, an avisynth script, a video file you encoded yourself?
The Vobs.

What I really want to know is precisely what causes the video to go off sync.

Also how come we don't just rip VOBs and use VirtualDUBMod for deinterlacing. Wouldn't that be easier?

The smart deinterlace filter in virtualdub doesn't work good alot of the time.
If you want to deinterlace in virtualdub you should try MSU Deinterlacing Filter
Thats the best one i seen

Please do - it looks like this is a really good deinterlacer.

*smaks forehead*
I made a HUGE mistake!
got the wrong filter from my favorites (i dont use vdub to deinterlace that often)
MSU was not the right filter.
The actual filter that would work best IS the smart deinterlace one.
Its the original interlace filter that doesn't work good.
The blend fields together option is suppose to be the best in the original but it can lower the quality of your video in high movement scenes.
Smart deinterlace is the best choice if you wanna deinterlace your video in virtualdub.
If you don't have it you can get it here

pardon my mistake
my mind is somewhere else right now... >.>

I don't know. I never even bother ripping the audio streams. What do you need them for?

What's your source, anyway? Deinterlacing in VDM is certainly the simplest way of doing things, but it's worth trying to reverse the telecine process before you start losing video information by deinterlacing.
