How bad does an AMV have to be?

if people think you honestly tried, even though it sucked, you'll usually get some 'pity points'. If you care, then tell people to rate it honestly, and hopefully they will.

The lowest score on my ops list is... around 3.0 ish. Lower than that and you have to have climbed out of my monitor and taken a dump on my desk. As it is.. that's pretty low.

I know it's nothing to be proud of and I'll recieve a ton of critisim for this but I just made a video that I hope doesn't get that many stars. If it does then I fell sorry for society lol

This is NOT a jab at the site or anyone here. I just decided to see what's the weirdest I could do and come up with something... indescribable. I made a typo when refering to this site in the video but I didn't correct it cause I didn't feel like wasting time redoing a pointless video.

I should upload it when I get a chance just to hear what is said...

For something to earn a 1 star from me, it has to smack insincere. I cant stand insincerity, and videos where it looks like someone is showing off, or being fake, manipulative, or generaly just lame always get a big 1 from me. I could care less about capture quality and originality.

I wonder if the fact that many people avoid the obviously bad videos, it sort of gives them an artificially higher star rating due to the fact that the people that would typically download them are probably fans of the music/anime and are going to be kinder on the video score-wise.

There are probably many videos deserving 1s (or 2s) that I will never view, and as such, will never get the score they need to truly reflect their sub-par status.

Then again, maybe there is a group of AMV editors and viewers that think that kind of drek is actually good... (100 million youtube visitors can't be wrong...?)

The editing fucking sucks? Check
The source quality looks like absolute shit? Check
The audio violates the geneva convention? Check

Provided it fails one of these, I'll rate it a three, at least. There's a finnish? amv that has beautiful music, but the editing is sub-par, and the quality sucks, but its probably one of my favorite amvs. Even if people rated videos as they felt, all the time, consistently instead of just tossing in pity points or they know who made it, you still wouldn't see a 1 video very often, if at all, unless only one person gave it a star. The creator isn't going to make a 1 star video. Their going to enjoy it, and more than likely you'll find someone who see's this video that should normally get low ratings and they'll love it.

As far as what star ratings mean to me, it's all about what kind of 3 you get. If you get a two and use common sources, why did that end up in my searches anyhow. But if its a video using uncommon sources, a 2 might indicate that a lot of people don't get it, and it's really a good video. Other times you have videos pushing 4.00+ and they suck.

Point being, don't rate your videos on what others rate them.

I'm surprised oto didn't jump in here, he's got a HCP video as his #2.

3 is not average star rating. It's the average of the possible scoring system but it's not the average of what's actually given. Last I heard the site average is 3.4 or so. Also keep in mind how many stars you have, if it has less than 100 stars then the star average means nothing at all. From what I can tell it's quite easy for a video to start off with a 4 rating from a few stars and end up below 3 after a hundred or so stars.

An easy way to interpret star ratings, assuming there's a large amount of stars:
Above 4.00 average - You have a popular video. Less than 1% of videos manage over 4.

3.4-4.0 - Better than average

3.0-3.4 - Below average

Below 3 - Since most people are too nice to say this let me make it clear, you fucking suck. You suck worse than Britney Spears doing a cover of Jack Kerouac's poetry. You suck worse than Pee Wee Herman teaching a sex ed class. You suck more than William Shatner dressed as a chorus girl while singing Springtime for Hitler. Hell, you suck worse than *ME* and that's rather difficult to do. If you get lower than a 3 and you weren't intentionally making something horrible then it's time for you to admit what an abject loser you are, give up, and go find another hobby. Please? I hear coin collecting is exciting and rather difficult to screw up no matter how big of a twit you are.

That being said I usually give out 2s or 3s. A 2 means your video bored me enough that I didn't finish watching it but wasn't so bad I wish a slow painful death on you. A three means I can't think up any mean QCs at the moment so I have 10 unrated videos in my list and want to download something else. 4 is I actually watched the whole video without once looking at the timeline to see when if fucking ended. A 5 means you impressed me. A 1 means that for some dumb ass reason I downloaded a silvermoon/sierra lorna video.
