CN Anime AMV report

The show took place at 4pm in the main theatre, on
two screens. There was seating for perhaps 1500 people,
and there were maybe 300 in attendance. The show lasted
for an hour, and while only 3 AMVs had a title card (which
was shown way too briefly) the playback was flawless
and the sound was good.

The AMVs shown were as follows (Song/Anime):

Still Preoccupied with 1985/Gravitation -
I cannot really be fair to this video because
suberunker's AMV just owns this song, there's
simply no comparison. On its own the AMV was OK,
I don't think the lyrics and song matched very
well (either literally or allegorically), but
the audience laughed throughout and applauded
enthusiastically in the end.

In the Air Tonight/Samurai Champloo(?) -
What first struck me was that the anime in this
video looks very cool, if it really was Samurai
Champloo I'll have to watch it. The song wasn't the
Phil Collins version, but a cover I didn't know.
I thought the video started strong, but soon fell
into the "chorus = fighting" trap, and then in the
end it just decided to become a fighting AMV.
Polite applause at the end.

Climbing the Walls/Unknown -
A nice romance/drama AMV. Perhaps too many flashes
for my taste, but a very solid effort. I wish I
knew the anime that was used. Polite applause at
the end.

Tears from the Moon/Sailor Moon -
Another good romance/drama AMV. Well-made, nothing
spectacular, but solid. Polite applause at the end.

So far the reaction of the audience has been
rather muted, all AMVs are applauded at the
end but the room isn't exactly brimming with
excitement. On the other hand the AMVs in
general are all drama/romance and even though
there's nothing wrong with that I do think the
organizers should have mixed it up a little more
because things only got gloomier with each passing
vid...

Sweet Song/Mahoromatic -
I thought Mahoromatic was a comedy? Well, not
here... another romance/drama AMV. Are AMV makers
all this wistful? Once again a good effort, and
applause at the end, but I sense people are
starting to get depressed.

Tip to AMV makers: romantic vids can also be upbeat,
yes? Shameless plug: "Oh! My Goddess!" set to "And We
Danced".

Hometown/Unknown -
The first line of this song is "He spoke of tortured
souls", so that should give you a good idea of where
this is going. It's a drama AMV, with good sync, and
an appropriately dark, gloomy mood. The lyrics were
hard to understand, though, and I thought the vid
was about a minute too long and could not maintain
focus in the end. Those who weren't about to cut
their veins already politely applauded.

Kokoro/Gundam(?) -
What's with all the Xenosaga songs? Another romance/
drama. I'm afraid sync wasn't very good, and there
was way too much mouth flapping going on. Not my
favourite, sorry. Polite applause, but by now the
emo level is starting to take its toll.

By_myslf/Unknown (mostly a guy on a skateboard) -
A heavy Linkin Park song, just what this audience
needs (not). I couldn't make much sense of the
AMV (I don't know the lyrics and the video wasn't
of the greatest quality). I can't comment much
on the AMV, it wasn't quite my cup of tea. People
started to leave by now, not so much because of
this particular vid, but because by now everyone
was depressed after nearly an hour of drama/tears
and overall downers. Light applause was all a few
could muster.

Unknown/Hellsing -
This one's rather a mess, and another downer to
boot. People are leaving in droves. I don't
want to sound too harsh about the creator, though,
the organizers have been relentless in putting
together an almost completely humourless show so
far.

And then, suddenly...

Best Comedy: Bicycle Race/Various, mostly "Last Exile" -
Well, the audience really appreciated this one now.
A solid vid, but really just OK for me since jarnik's
version of "Bicycle Race" is the definitive one (using
mostly Studio Ghibli footage no less). Regardless,
the survivors in the audience were enthusiastic about
this one.

Best Miscellaneous: Run With Us/Bleach
It tries, but it has a hard time finding what to show
given that a lot of the lyrics have very little to do
with the anime. This is a problem because the match
is literal whenever possible, and so it becomes obvious
when the creator didn't know what to do when, for example,
the lyrics mention "talking over the telephone". The
audience liked it, though.

Best Drama: Staralfur/Fullmetal Alchemist -
Very good AMV, undoubtedly deserved the win. I always like
videos which can make me feel what the lyrics are saying
even if I don't understand them. It does make the mistake
(IMO) of showing long passages of text, I really don't
see the need. A bit on the long side, too, but the best
vid of the show. Applause from all.

That wraps it up. My Nausicaa AMV wasn't shown (along with
many others, I'm sure), but all in all an entertaining show,
if perhaps a tad too depressing. Kudos again to the AV people,
they really did do a good job.

PS. Feel free to repost on the org, if anyone is curious.

aren't there two more winners?

Post by sakkiadatta » Tue Sep 12, 2006 4:54 pm

I, sadly, couldn't make it this year but when I was at CNAnime in 2005 they had a "Best Action" and "Best in Show" award too. Did they not have those two categories this year?

I know I should have posted about this sooner, considering I attended the contest some time ago. But, myself and a few of my friends got to talking about this very subject recently, and I was wondering the same thing as the above poster. Why did they have no Best Action or Best in Show awards this year? I've been looking around, trying to find the answer to this with no luck. Surely there must have been at least one person who submitted an action video, because I doubt that all the videos submitted were drama based.

Also, on a kind of related note, I was the one who made the Run With Us/Bleach AMV, and I actually agree with what was posted on the Yahoo group list above. A few people asked me why I chose the song I did, and my response to them is that I wanted to try something completely unexpected that wasn't rock or nu metal, like many other Bleach AMV's I see (please note that I do enjoy listening to rock and nu metal).

If I had to choose one AMV that should have won Best in Show, I think it should have been the Bicycle Race AMV. That video brought a smile to my face. :D

um... I made the Staralfur AMV but I wasn't able to attend the contest myself, and I have not been able to get a response out of the CNA people or find any officially posted results for their contest this year or any other year. Do they even post the results or contact the winners? Will they at least tell me that I won, via email?

The most contact I ever had with them was last year when we were enquiring about the prizes they promised, which the winners never received. Later, they flat out denied that they were going to give us any although their promo material printed otherwise.

I also e-mailed the guy this year about getting official results, but he never got back to me.

This is why I don't like CNA =/
