Super Search format option: All formats except WMV and RM

Post by Shazzy » Sat Sep 02, 2006 1:36 am

Pretty self-explanatory: search inclusively for MPG, MPEG, AVI, and MOV while excluding WMV and RM. It'd be an "increase your chances of finding a high-quality AMV that isn't based on DBZ" function!

I'd use it... A number of people may take offence to it though. Spicifically in this thread and very loudly.

Maybe limit your filesize to more than a certain set point. You may still get the "lolz I compressed it all I can and it's still 120 MB" crowd, but you'll probably cut out the WMVs.

Not that I agree with the idea necessarily, but you could probably avoid them with a setting that's already there.

The size idea would probably work better. To get a RM file larger than 30 megas, you'd need what, 50 minutes of video?

The filesize limit cuts out good quality trailers, shorts, and some H.264 encodes, though. It's annoying that I can't search for "new AMVs in the last month" without wading through hundreds of sucky quality videos in a format that I can't play consistently anyway (WMVs hardly ever play smoothly in Windows Media Player or Flip4Mac on my year-old Mac). Unless, of course, I do four separate searches, in which case I can't sort the whole list by another relevant factor...

Haven't seen the code for the Org's search function, but I know a multiple format search option is not difficult using PHP and some Javascript.

There already is a max min file size.

The supersearch is already pretty overloaded with options.
I'd support a 'files of type' checkbox (defaulted to ALL) then if people don't want .wmv, or .RM they could deselect it.

And the no-WMV-or-RM limit cuts out the rare watchable video in those filetypes. Can't have it all. I'm just suggesting it as a temporary measure in the meantime, if it would help.

How about sorting by star rating? You get some cases of inflation, but if you really want to avoid crap, there's that too. Again, as something you could do right now.

Why do people assume that codecs like RealVideo are incapable of producing streams at anything but horribly low bitrates?

That idea sounds good to me. I'd use it.

Sucks to be you, missing out on a lot of good AMVs.
