What is Masking?(newb)

Can someone please explain what masking is?(is it when you combine animes, like you put goku in cowboy bebop?)

Anything that removes one part of a picture, allowing the remaining part to be combined with another picture. Cutting out Goku and putting him into CB is advanced masking. Overlaying one picture over another (say, to cut out lip-flap in a character who isn't moving) is simple masking.

Do you know where I could learn how to do advanced masking?

Also would it be possible to make a fight between two people from different animes such as Goku and Naruto?
How long would this take?

You need to have an eye for placement and timing or be willign to really work at it. I'd estimate at least 10-15 hours of work per minute for the masking if you were good at it. For a first timer... maybe 20-25?
