Does anyone do Fan Favorites anymore?

Post by Ladymercury » Tue May 30, 2006 9:12 am

I noticed that the cons here in Florida don't do fan favorites anymore. Last AMV contest I participated in was AFO4 (back in 2003, wow, that's nearly three years ago) and they had a lot of catagories... fan favorite, drama, action, parody, etc. But I noticed that with the categories this year, its simply four categories. Best drama, action, parody and then best of show.

Is this the same for contest around the country? I think it sucks, because a video can get the audience response and won't get an award for fan favorite :( etc.

What are your opinions.... x_x

Most of the cons I have entered either have a fan Fav or the Catagories are voted on by the fans ...

Really? Wow, yeah, last con I participated in only had four categories and no fan favorites... Thought it was strange when I started thinking back.

i think that possibly some people get upset that their video which is technically better gets "overlooked" by the fans because they didnt use a "popular anime" so alot of cons are going to judged contests?

theory only... I've no clue

as far as i know most cons are actually based on fan response/voting

The voting process for something like that is often cumbersome, and is really more trouble then it's worth. I've seen some contests just go by applause, but that's a pretty inaccurate way to go, so it's not optimal either.

Nonetheless, some cons still do it. Fanime has a lot of fan-decided categories. Megacon gave out a fan favorite award this year as well.

I don't really think they do much good, though. It can end up encouraging entries that just fan-pander in an attempt to garner the prize. And for the sake of us who tire of hearing the inevitable collective squeal whenever Sepiroth comes onscreen, this is not desirable. What should be most important isn't how popular of a source one can use, but the actual editing skill behind it.

Besides the fangirl/boy aspect of things to certain sources, there's also the fact that for singular fan favourite awards, almost inevitably, comedy wins, regardless of whether it proved to be the technically or creatively compelling compared to the rest.
