Buy the DVDs and get a ripping program (DVDShrink or DVDDecrypter), then encode the VOBs using VirtualDubMod, or something similar. The AMV-app package has all the software you need, assuming you have a DVD drive (If you don't, then things get trickier, but you can buy one rather cheap nowadays).

That's the most thorough how-to guide here.

VOBs are DVD files---basically this is what you end up with after ripping the DVD to your computer. Encoding is...well, basically, think of it as a language I guess. The VOBs describe to your computer how the video should look, but you need to translate that into something your editing software can understand, since it probably can't read VOBs. A lossless codec is probably best, like huffy or lagarinth (I know that's gotta be spelt wrong), but if you're tight on disk space something like MPEG works too. Think of VOBs as French, when your video editor only understands English.

AMV-App is a software package containing programs and video codecs that are helpful for making AMVs. You can find it here.

I've looked at the guides myself, and they are a little confusing for a newbie (the one above is good, once you figure out where to start). Hope this helps.

Just search yourself a friend living near to you (Otohiko?!) and let him/her give you a hand at first. That's how I came to amvs, it's really worth a lot if others help you in the beginning of your carreer :P.

I know we're not supposed to recommend a site on where to download all your footage, but this one is the best. High Definition material straight from Japan all on a high speed server.
