.mp4's are video, .mp3's are audio. That could be part of your problem.

Actually, .mp4 can be either audio and/or video. Same as .mp2 since both are just containers. .mp4 is the container for MPEG-4 video and associated audio (usually AAC, but also AC3 or even MP3). .mp2 is the container for MPEG-1 Layer 2 Audio but it can include video data. Ideally, I'd like to see the .mp4 container used exclusively for video purposes and associated as such in applications (this means you, Winamp!). For audio only files, I prefer using .m4a as the file extension for AAC audio, even though it isn't officially part of MPEG-4's naming specs.

.mp3 on the other hand, is used exclusively as an audio format file extension. Although it can be argued that file extensions are meaningless since you can rename any file extension, and as long as you use the correct software to open it, it will play it back regardless of whether your MP3 is tagged as a .mp3 or .m3p. Some software will complain or refuse to play it, but some won't care.
Having trouble playing back videos? I recommend: Image

Do it

Install, play .mp4 audio/visual files in any directshow based player. Simple.
