<sigh> n00b question about Windows Media Player

I've been a registered member for... some 2-3 years now and this is the first time I've posted to the forums.

Anyways, several videos in my collection will occasionally trigger fatal errors in Windows Media Player, usually every other time they're played. Off the top of my head I can name these:

The Legend of Kyoto
[Koop] Waking Hour Remastered
Inuyasha-Heirloom
Inuyasha-We Belong (Anywhere etc.)

and a few others. I've noticed that they all use my DivX codec but most of my Divx movies don't have this problem. Any ideas about fixing this?

WMV always trigger errors in my WMP.

Just use vlc media player isntead.

You possibly have codec conflicts/problems.

First, do you have ffdshow installed? And if so, try disabling ffdshow's support for any codec you already have installed such as DivX, XviD, MP3, etc. Next time you play the offending videos, make note of a "FF" icon appearing on the right hand part of your taskbar next to the clock. That is an indication that ffdshow is doing some decoding. WMP seems to have problems with ffdshow.

Also, you may want to update your existing codecs to newer versions.

Or, switch to an alternative player like or [url=http://www.videolan.org/vlc/]VLC Media Player.

well i used the "Acces MegaCodec Pack" and Media Player Classic to reproduce the AMVs and i never have any problem so i recomended this pack of codecs.

And codec packs usually aren't a good idea. 80 - 90% of the posts regarding Adobe Premiere issues are codec pack related. Also, many Windows Media Player issues can be traced to ffdshow.

My personal setup and recommendation is:

Install XviD 1.1. Have it decode XviD, DivX, and mp4v.
Install Media Player Classic (with Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative).
Install VLC Media Player.
Optional: Install ffdshow, but disable most, if not all of it's decoding.

Alright, VLC hasn't crashed even once so far; it may be buggy and not very user-friendly, but it works. Thanks Willen!

Still gonna try the others just to see if anything works better.
