***Calling all savvy Mac users who have done a Serial Experiments Lain AMV at least once in your life!***
I am looking for some Mac-specific help, specifically about Lain! So far, I have found that the DVDs are interlaced or telecined beyond my attempts to repair them. Diva's deinterlace function leaves artifacts in my picture and screws up the quality. Somebody else on the forum mentioned that the originals have the field dominance messed up, where it changes from even to odd depending on scene changes. I've seen a million beautiful Lain AMVs out there, which leads me to think that deinterlacing this brilliant piece of animation is indeed possible.
I have all the interlaced footage ripped to Quicktime *.mov files, in the Apple Motion JPEG B format, selected Two Fields, Even Fields Dominant (default). So far I've been working with Diva and JES Deinterlacer, but JES keeps crashing on me.
I believe I need to inverse-telecine it. Has anybody succeeded in doing that to Lain? If so, please share your war stories here and help a noob!

In Diva, you need to check the Deinterlace box in the "Image & Credits" popup window. You ALSO need to select "Force Constant Frame Rate" in the "Video" menu at the top.
JES tends to crash if your file is too big. Try splitting it into smaller chunks.
If you're still having problems, send me an IM and we'll work it out.
