That's what it is basically.
I'm not sure i explained what i want to say correctly (my english really sucks sorry  ). I meant that some videos may won just because the creator is very famous, whereas better videos may be forgotten just because the creator is not yet very known...

For example, if 2 equally-awesome videos were qualified in VCA, first done by Hito, second done by someone unknown here, ..... well ... the second won't stand a chance. I guess it can't be helped  .

Yup i'll second that, music epecully since the most popular videos i have (I have popular videos?) use much more popular songs then those that arent popular.

Vlad G Pohnert wrote:To be honest, the song and the anime are the largest influencial factors in how many people download it... For instance, using an 80s song will get you less attendtion or an anime very few have heard about...

This is not to say that that one should focus on popular aniem and music, just more of a statistic if you look at hits and downloads.

The videos of high quality are the ones that get all the hits.

and here this is exactly what I thought the VCAs were?? lol.. ah well its all good I'm ready to lose :D
I wish people would not put so much blame on the VCA for being an popularity contest in itself. Yes, it is, BUT that's because the members of the org make it so, not because the contest exists itself

I think the VCAs do bring out a lot of good videos in the semi-finals... but the results in some cases tend to be influenced by factors such as effects, anime, music and not the elements that the category is actually referring to.

I at least hope people actually vote objectively (one can hope  ) To me, even if I hate the music or anime, it still may be a good video!

Another factor that influences it somewhat:

Distribution format. MPEG-1 and DivX/XviD videos beat most others out-of-hand (WMV really only qualifies because of the sheer number of them), and most people nowadays have the necessary software to play those back. Very rarely do you see videos in other containers or formats, and when you do, it's typically ones like MOV or RM that have an official player from the company that spawned the format. Try making an AVC-encoded Matroska file and see how few downloads you get.

Sure, some people will download it because they have the software (and there may be the impression that those who distribute in those formats also edit better), or because they like downloading exoticly formatted videos - myself included - but the viewing audience at large won't take the steps to watch it 90-95% of the time, despite warnings you give them, sometimes blatantly ignoring them and giving a low opinion score or flame in the quick comments.
